Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Flywheel movement

We have an 04 ducato with 100k miles that had some engine/ gearbox noise. It was quite noticable so we brought it to a gearbox specialist who diagnosed it as bearing noise in the gearbox. It was working fine otherwise. He quoted for the job with an extra-over for a new clutch if needed and we proceeded. He carried out the work and it did indeed need a new clutch which was fitted. He called up to say the van was ready.

On collection, he told us that he had an engine problem to report. He told us that he noticed that if you held onto the flywheel that it, along with the crank pulley would move in-and-out quite a bit. He told us he'd called a local engine specialist who told him it was a problem caused by riding the worn clutch. He said it probably wasn't going to deteriorate today or tomorrow but it must be fixed. He said it was some kind of collapsed bearing issue that could be fixed through the sump and the bill wouldn't be outrageous.

Our MD went off on one and is conviced that the gearbox specialist somehow caused this damage or at least benefitted by mis-diagnosing the problem. He suspects some form of foul play even if it was by not reporting the problem sooner. We only briefly drove the van and it didn't appear to have any noticeable noise.

The question is whether the gearbox is telling us the whole truth or not. We're not experts and we only have his word that the problem was existing. Also, surely this is a serious problem that needs immediate attention, right?

Its your thrust bearings. Its USUALLY caused by a poorly adjusted clutch pushing against the crank nose.
Get them seen to ASAP, you dont want pistons wobbling in the bore.

If A engine "SPecialist" says its cheap, then I'd get him to do it.

Thrust bearings on my car is engine out, although you *may* get at your through the sump, which would be alot less messy.

You will find that the engine will soon start randomly displaying sympoms of poor starting and running. Also its at 100K, the engine is starting to wear.

I cant think how taking off a flywheel could damage the Thrust washers unless somebody majorly ****ed up.
