    Bad news I'm afraid:

All candidates should be resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years to enter the vetting process. All applicants who have not lived in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years from the closing date of the campaign will not be vetted and their application will not be processed further.

Got my letter yesterday too, my vetting is still ongoing, fingers crossed it clears for next month's calls and I wont have to go through the IST again!

Will see how it goes. Did not go for the whole 105 words though. I probably put in about half of that!!

Quick question all, and it may seem daft. I have one child and another on the way. We live in Republic and due to family support my partner aint to keen on moving up North. Now, I know you do your first 4 weeks training and you are given accom but what happens after that??

I am just thinking about money for rent etc. Also, can you be in the PSNI and reside in the republic? If so how does it work for salary etc??

    Best of luck all

Letter for IST came today too. Happy days! No point in getting nervous people...take it all in your stride!

roughly how far away is it? Thats a quick response time! I applied late last week so should hear soon.

You can apply to stay in the accomodation block for the full 20 weeks because of the distance you would have to travel each day.

There are a few people who live in ROI and work across the border. It's not a big deal and they strongly advise against it for security reasons.

Got my letter for IST the other day, about 5 weeks away! Wasn't nervous at all about it last year but starting to worry after reading everyone saying not to underestimate it! I think I totally fluked it last year, would be gutted if I failed it this year after having previously passed it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 94 ✭✭0607

You used to be exempt from the IST if you passed it last time and were reapplying the following...

It was great being able to skip it. :D

Out of interest...would spending 6 months in America be classed as not being resident even though it was only part of a gap year and Ive lived here all my life? That seems a bit of a harsh rule, if so had I got to the vetting stage last year it would've been a waste of time because I never knew this!

    Hi guys,

I'm new to the boards and also a first-timer! Got the application in early in the week and have been practising tests past few nights. Maths don't come naturally to me so I'm nervous having read some of the previous postings:(. Anyway, it was really good to find a forum like this one with like-minded folk.

best of luck to everyone, beca

I would guess 6 months living in America would be classed as not being "resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years"... but that's only a guess. The only real way to find out for sure is to contact them and ask.

This book seems to be the best out there at the minute. The feedback I've been given from people who bought it is all positive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 90 ✭✭jclegs

The book that PSNI recommended is the one that I used. It focuses on the English forces but it does the job. There are also a lot of tips and practice tests if you do a quick Google for verbal or Numerical reasoning tests.

How strict is vetting? Ive never been in trouble myself.. My brother was caught several time drink driving... ( I don't associate with him in any way myself...) Im Rc and from way down south... Will this affect my chances?? And what details are you required to give on vetting from? and must you include aunt/uncles details?confused.gif

    Thanks in Advancebiggrin.gifwink.gif

You only have to provide details on your immediate family e.g. father/mother/brothers/sisters and if you are married also your wife and her father/mother.

I wouldn't worry about your brother. Just take every stage in your stride, concentrate on the IST first, it is not easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭beca

bottom line... if you have a clean history, and none of your immediate family are on the run from the police you will be ok. you cannot be held responsible for their actions!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭Big-Mac

Excellent I ordered that book last week! thanks for that PSNI. I have a question for all you guys if its ok to ask?....are most on here from the north or south? Il start off, im from the south.

    Hi Big Mac,

I'm from the North myself. There seems to be loads from the South on the threads though!

I have that book PSNI refers to. Its very informative and shows how tough the tests must actually be!

Has anyone started any fitness training yet in hope of getting through IST? I was training all last year but have gone astray last few months while trying to finish up a PhD.

Know its going to hurt getting back to it:eek:

    Ya wha?
There is no fitness test involved in recruitment. Only when you actually get to the college...

I was running quite alot there but give it a miss over that cold spell now finding it really hard to get back to it. At the minute im doing alot of brain training and reading etc to try get my brain back to working order for this test!

Whoops, I phrased that wrong i guess. I mean training in prep for when it would be needed:D

Just the thought of the several rounds of testing is enough to worry about at the minute.

I found Brain Training to be a very big help. Also do not underestimate practice tests, do as many of these as you can and focus on speed and accuracy. Time yourself and you will see improvements.

2nd try for me coming up! Fingers Crossed! I did the brain training last year and found it helped when it came to feeling the pressure of the time restraints!

I am reading and doing the practice tests but to be honest its really taking its toll. Just cant decipher between T and CT!

Had the same problem last year. If the topic is mentioned in the article then the answer has to be either T or F. If it is not then it has to be CT. Took me ages to suss that one. Simplessssh!

    Welcome to the forum Donna.

Its only been a week so thats pretty normal. I think they say that you should not contact them until 14 days have passed so give it another few days before u start worrying. I think mine took 12 days to arrive!

Not 100% on when you have to give educational qualifications but i do know that there is a small brief section on the web application form. Im sure PSNI can fill you in on that one.

Add me to the list too...second timer!! Fingers crossed for this one.

Thanks MisterJay! Still confusing all the same as in one of the sample ones it mentioned it in the text but the answer in my opinion was false as it was opposite to the statement made yet the solution said CT!! GRRRR!!

    Hi Tommy

You do not have to give any details of your educational qualifications that i am aware of and you only give references on your vetting form if you are lucky enough to get that far. Good luck with your application.

The amount of the verbal reasoning practice tests i've done where i've got completely the opposite answer from what is apparently right is unbelievable. I think sometimes I can be a bit too argumental for my own good! Need to tone it down because I think it was the reasoning bit that failed me last year :(

A good few of us on it I see.

Pluginbaby 2112 - I am going to look at it carefully. I will continue to do practice tests and see can i see a common trend when CT is used. Its driving me up the walls at this stage! Nevermind the numerical!

If last year is anything to go by Im not going to get ahead of myself! Flew through the lot. Got in to the car afterwards and thought Easy.... Oh how wrong was i!
