It was excellent, Hugh went toe to toe with Jon Gaunt, a smarmy columnist from The Sun, and wiped the floor with him.

Have a look on Youtube tomorrow for some clips.

Put it this way, Hugh would be a much better PrimeMinister in real life than he was in Love Actually.

How apt; wiping the floor with someone who writes for a rag best used for wiping asses.

I presume they were discussing NOTW scumbag "journalistic" techniues?

I have never bought the NOTW in my life but I'm sure they must of had some decent and hardworking reporters and subs in Dublin, it is tough on them.

Why feel sorry for them? In a smaller way, they assist the Murdoch empire.

During 1994, that God awful cover was like the never ending second national anthem.

There are good and bad in every organisation, I feel sorry for anyone who loses their job through absolutely no fault of their own.

These people usually find work in another publication(s) eventually.

It is not exactly like the old coal miners, who had nowhere else to go.

I disagree, there are alot of journos out there that are fighting for freelance scraps at the moment.

Being freelance myself for a few years, I can attest that a number of them have looked down on me. F*ck them tbh.

I have worked for a few more specialist type of magazines in the past, which didn't exactly have the deep pockets of a Murdoch at the helm.

Journos and subbers who worked for such crap as the Murdoch and O'Reilly titles, contributed to the low on intellectual value, and pro-establishment bias of these titles.

That is one hell of a sweeping statement, there are some fine journalists employed by these publications.

How critical were the earlier ones though of FF and the connection with property developers and bankers years ago though? Bit to close to home for the newspaper owner?

Why is it the likes of economists like Morgan Kelly and Gurdgiev who seemed to know the most about the Golden Circle, and are more vocal in their criticism than any mainstream journo?

As for Miriam Lord, calling a few politicians nicknames isn't exactly the height of witty commentary. All the better if its a Shinner or an independent to her.

Eilish O'Regan is OK, I agree.

But for all of that, there is Kevin Myers, Brendan O'Connor, Garda Gerry fellow, Ian O'Doherty, so on, and the bad very much outweighs the good.

I don't have to tell you who I have worked for, just like i'm not expecting you to divulge similar info on a public forum.

'Connections' go some way in Irish journalism, and don't be naive in your response to that, because I am sure you know that too!

For example, about five years ago, Justine McCarthy could not publish a story in the Irish Indo about Irish ferries staff being exploited pay wise by management. I'm sure it taught Justine a valuable lesson, that you can only reveal so much if you work for a big paper.

I didn't really expect you to state that you worked for "X" publication but if you are a freelance and if for example you contribute to the dailys on a regular basis you could mention that as they have lots of different contributors.

I agree that having family members in journalism can be a big help but if you are talented and eager enough you should be able to make it in journalism on your own. In a previous job, I used to come into regular contact with journalists and some have it and others don't. Some "journalists" are quite content to lift other journalists stories and do a minimal amount of re-writing, while others are extremely passionate and interested in getting their own stories.

I can't comment on the Justine issue as I'm not aware of the situation there.

Don't forget Eilis O'Hanlon, Eoghan Harris, Gwen Halley (formerly of the Sindo, now the latter's wife), Emer O'Kelly, Victoria Mary Clarke, Anne Harris, the editor Aengus Fanning, Barry 'Ego' Egan, Celia Larkin, Ruth Dudley Edwards (she with the Conrad Black obsession) ... the paper is packed full of shock jocks and rent-a-comment hacks.

The only one on the earlier list that was at all palatable is Gene Kerrigan. The Sindo isn't a 'news' paper: it's just a collection of ranting and raving columnists, plugs for supposedly famous models and supermarket advertising.
