Joan Burton was right.. The (useless, layabout) lad next door, about 23 gets rent allowance, dole, medical card and does fuk all ... Why would he bother working ..

In a properly run society, it should NEVER be more benficial for a person to live on social welfare than to take up a job, and the dole should be reduced sufficiently until this is the case..

I take huge offense at Burton's words. Especially the bit about not engaing with FAS coures. They are nothing but a useless joke. I did one months ago and so far the only confirmation that I passed is a fcuking TEXT MESSAGE from the instructor. No letter, no email, nothing.Am I supposed to put that on my CV? At this stage I have completely forgotten everything I learned.

A few weeks ago when I looked on FAS for jobs locally and there was not one single job. Not one. Plenty of WPPs and schemes but no jobs. And some of these WPPs are basically looking for well qualified and experienced people that they don't want to pay. e.g., a GP's practice looking for a qualified, experienced medical sectretary. Are you seriously trying to tell me that GPs can't afford to pay their secretaries?

I put myself through Uni (no grant, paid tuition for my master's) and now I'm supposed to work for free for a skinflint for the "experience"? Or engage with FAS and "down"skill?

Dont get me wrong Sardy.. I think one of the cruelest things is that people who worked all the way through the boom and now have a legitimate right to dole payments are now entering the system when the benefits are being cut..... given that it was their taxes that were subsidizing the (ridiculous) 208 euro a week to those who didnt work during the boom..

Fás actually retards the progress of people looking for work.. It's a gravy train for a lot of people, and should have been shut down.. full stop..

Another pointless and boring show tonight. I reckon TV3 would be better off showing yet another episode of that Law And Order shyte and let Vinnie's show take a break for the summer while he's away.

Yes, but jon, there are plenty of people who don't know me or my circumstances who think of me what you do about your neighbour. And there are a lot of people like me. Outside Cork and Dublin there are simply no jobs.
I don't know why people feel happier about someone on the dole doing a course that's going nowhere than they would about someone not doing such a course. It doesn't make the slightest difference to your pay packet. In fact it's even more of an insult, 'cos those taxes are going to keep a useless organisation afloat.

I get looked at like I'm scum sometimes. The sickening thing is that my bachelor's was in social policy; I wanted to work in welfare! be a job's facilitator or something like that. Instead I have to go crawling to incompetents who are not qualified (not even a leaving cert in one case) who don't know what they are doing who got "pulled" into their jobs.

I can't emigrate 'cos of family commitments. The parent I'm caring for is not sick enough (yet) for me to claim carer's allowance (no stigma attached to that) And there are no jobs locally. What would you suggest someone like me does?

Well put, it's very easy for people to make sweeping statements about everything.

Spot on Sardonicat. A few years ago I was interviewed by a facilitator, who was as thick as pigshyte. She told me that with my qualifications I could get some summer work in the Welfare Office and that she'd ring me around May/June. I never got that call. Instead I heard that most of the summer work was given out to relatives of people working there already. I did a FAS course which was of no benefit to me but I thought it was better than doing nothing. It was a waste of time but what made it even more annoying was that I applied to a hospital for the mandatory "work experience" at the end of the course. It was clerical/office stuff but the hospital told me they couldn't give me work experience because of insurance implications!! So I spent a couple of weeks looking around for work experience which I couldn't get (the only people who got the work experience got it through nepotism) while getting no payments whatsoever. FAS wouldn't pay me because I wasn't handing in any timesheets while the Welfare wouldn't pay me because I was "officially" doing a FAS course!!!

The whole system is completely fecked up yet Joan Thatcher Burton seems to be under the impression that FAS or (whatever they're calling themselves now) is the answer to everyone's troubles! They're all a joke.

We are easy scapegoats. And, it will get worse.

The whole relatives getting part time in the welfare offices makes my blood boil! I even got asked by someone in the welfare office what social policy qualified me for! I answered, "Your job, actually."

What's even worse is fill-in community welfrare officer posts going to relatives. This is a highly specialised role and you need to know your onions in terms of welfare to do that job. Can you imagine how someone with a degree in social policy feels when some 18 year old waiting on their leaving results asseses them?

Burton (and this whole new govt) have seriously betrayed me.
I expected truth, plain talking and cuts.

I expected and willed them to tell the truth not this awful demonsiation of swathes of the population - it starts with the school-leavers (I mean who in their right mind chooses to live on max yes, that's max 100€ a week as a lifestyle choice?) in a few months another unemployed demographic will get the 'treatment' of stereotyping/demonising with the usual brickbats being flung at them - 'lazy', 'not motivated', 'not contributing' maybe it'll be my little group which now comprise over 75% of the unemployed. You know, that group of Irish workers who magically happened to all think around the same period that the dole was the place for them, that it was paradise, a lifestyle to be coveted!
Not to mention that in 2007 unemployment was at 4% (lowest in Europe) and internationally recognised as full employment - approx 28,000 of the figure of ~100,000 that's bandied about as the amount of feckless lifestyle welfare recipients were the actual lifestyle welfare recipeints she's talking about - target them Burton and lay off the majority of the rest who are busting a nut trying to keep heads above water and dignity intact and have contributed to this country.

But, as always, there is a chink of truth in what she says - SW (like every single facet of this country) needs top to bottom reform but at least she could have the requisite training in place (and some paying jobs please) and not be relying on railroading people into the abyss of awfulness that is FAS, WPPs and jobbridges...FAS being the employment organisation that actually reduces your chances of employment by 13% as reported earlier in the year!

1125-1205 tonight again, any word who is on? I have to say if I was the FG Chief Whip and wanted to give one of my basket cases a bit of media experience without causing too much of a mess, throwing them on the VB show this week might not be a bad idea. Poor Pascul seems to be the FG default guest for the show.

Why is Maura Derrane dressed as Barney The Dinosaur?

Seems like tonight's show will be just another token half hour... They should have just took a break rather than cutting the show in half..

The Cloyne Report, Colm O'Gorman and others.

Already had to listen to the woes of the Artane Industrial schools on the wireless today, can't take any more of it.

Johnny Marbles, comedian and social campaigner. I believe he was the guy photographed in the prison clothes and Murdoch mask all last week.
