Advice about annual leave and contract

    My friend is working in media and has been with her current employer for eight years.

    Without going into too much detail, she is paye employee but out of contract for nearly 14 months in the role she is hired to do. She has requested from her manager for her contract to be renewed and has been fobbed off by saying that its up to the CEO to issue contracts and has been re-assured verbally that her job is safe. She has the highest performence figures within her role and the company and is anxious for peace of mind to have her contract on paper with the current financial climate of the country.

    She also has annual leave days owed to her from nearly two years now and keeps getting rolled over into the new year and has tried addressing this but the company is understaffed and a few others there are in the same boat. She is not a union member.

    Any advice on what she can do?

    not sure about the contract part, but it would be very unusual for any company to allow AL to roll over for two years - usually it states in all contracts that you must take it within the given year, some allow a roll over for a month or two, and after that if you haven't taken them you loose them - you don't get paid for them. If the reason for having so many days left is due to the manager refusing time off, then really the only way you can approach this is to be sure to get something in writing, even an email stating that they refused your time off and confirming how long they will allow the days to be carried over. if you don't have anything in writing it will be very difficult to get any joy on this one, and your friend may as well kiss goodbye to those AL days now.
