Please please help me. I'm after dropping my iomega external hard drive. All my pics going back to 2001 and some imp docs are on it.

It looks like it's powering up - but it's not registering on the Laptop.

Is there any way that I can recover my precious pictures?

    So upset here.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I'm pretty sure you will have to send this to data recovery specialists.

    Try this company:

    Not necessarily...
Was the drive powered up when you dropped it?

First thing would be to check of the connections internally are still ok. Did the same thing recently to a drive here at home that wasn't powered at the time - unscrewed it all and just shoved the drive inside back snug against the connectors.. You'ld honestly think I had done nothing - but it powered up perfectly next time.

If the drive is out of warranty - I would give that a try first.

ok and here's the story of the external hard drive to date

Tried to get in touch with computerlynx in Athlunkard Street this morning. Waited till 10am for them to open - no sign - called - answering machine - no reply. Left and went over to PC World. OMG...

The fella down there said it was "goosed". Tough luck. Got upset and cross then and called him back. Told him that he didn't even open up the cover to see if the drive was still viable, that he only did what I did last night checking up the disk management.

Eventually, once he found a screwdriver, he opened up the casing! The drive was still working. Needed a new case so had to go to maplins for it as PC didn't have any. Back to PCW and he put the drive into it. Plugged it in and yeahhhhhhhhhh all my pics are still here. Rushed home and put them all back onto the computer. Just finished that now.

If I hadn't insisted in him opening it up - I'd have lost the lot. I love looking back on them. Don't know whether to thank them or not. But I'm finally breathing again.

Thanks for the help too. :D

Delighted for you LB6 - Most People only learn the Backups lesson when they lose the lot for good - I see it a lot in my work.

Best thing you could do as soon as you have the funds, is backup the whole lot onto a cheap portable drive and leave in your Parents/Friends/Work or wherever.

    - Reason being that fire or theft would be the next most likely way you'd lose your current two copies of your 9 years of memories......

There are lots of free online sites to keep a backup of your photos.
i use Picasa a lot and for €20 got 20GB of storage just remember to
upload them at the original resolution, takes a while but you keep the quality.

The other advantage is you can share the pics or keep them private and even embedd slideshows if you want.

Cheaper than an external drive and your pgotos are available where ever you have the internet.

You get 2GB for Free so one trick is setup 3 or 4 Gmail accounts and get lots of storage.!

be sure to check you external HD for bad sectors. while you might not be able to see any damage to it, it is best to check it all the same.

Its a pity you did not READ the sign on the door , "10 ish to 5.30pm " . Also the idea of an Answering Machine is to Leave a Message " That way I can return any calls I have missed instead of Using my Crystal Ball " . Anyway I'm glad PCW Got you sorted out.

I did read the sign. Had been waiting outside since 9.45am. "10-ish" I thought - ok - that could mean any time from 9.45 till 10.30 at most. That "10-ish" thing won't really entice people to wait around. I phoned too - no reply - answering machine is not going to fix a problem for me in a hurry. Waited around till 10.40 - thought that was enough "ish" for one morning!

Maybe if you were to open at a definite time you wouldn't need a crystal ball!

Edit - I'm happy they did too!

PPS - It's not that clear to read either behind the frosted glass on the door!...
Too many conflicting notes on the door - misleading times - ring bell - closed.
