I was having the same problem since last September. The internet was unusable during peak hours. After 5 months of eircom been unable to fix it I cancelled my eircom account and switched to a wireless provider. I now have a fast and reliable internet connection again .

I couldnt even watch more than five minutes of the liverpool match without it stopping. Mind you it was a blessing in disguise but that's for another forum

Less than 2mb on a Sunday afternoon, when I assume most people wouldn't even be on the net.

I can't even stay on Skype because of this stupidity...3-5 days...my arse!

Service this morning was awful, pages not loading every 10 mins, taking 2 mins to come back, and all the while i have full bars of signal, and internet is showing as connected!
Ive borrowed my mams Netopia router to try for a few hours and so far, no drops at all!

So, when will they accept that this new router is a pile of dung!

Are most eircom customers these days using the zyxel prestige modem they ship out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,448 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

I'm got rid of the eircom route as it was acting up and now using a Linksys router.
Massive improvement vpn wise on dialing into work etc and accessing what I need to..
however still seeing the same crap speeds in the internet...
I'm very tempted to hack everyone's eircom router nearby and disable them (they're all using the old wep keys :D )

I think its the standard one they send out now.

Do they still do the Netopia one?

I have not had one drop in connection for the last 24hrs while using my mums Netopia router, and ive been downloading on BitTorrent too, and no problems.

That Zyxel one is a piece of crap.

Im in Carlow , and sounds like I have the same problem as eveyone else, we have the Silver Netopia modem , really slow speeds at peak times , speed test now at midday gets up too 2500kbps but from around 7-11 pm im lucky to get above 400kbps , we have two laptops on wireless , one is Lenovo and ones a Hewlet packard and the Lenovo one seems to get lower speeds for some reason , they are both relatively new laptops too .

Both my friend and I got the modem from Eircom (applied to upgrade to 24mb) today. Can confirm that the modems are Zyxel's - 660's, if I remember correctly.
Needless to say, it was immediately transferred to it's place of honour in the attic....among all the other crap modems from Eircom.
Been using a netgear DG834G (now rev4) for last 4 yrs...never a problem with connections.

Can anyone tell me why the Netopia router im using is working perfectly, but is showing as Access-Local Only on my task bar?!
It did show Local & Internet once last night, but mostly it says Local only, why is this?

And with regards to the Zyxel, i rang Eircom about mine, and they have had some "issues" with them, but they are meant to be more stable at holding connection than the Netopia.
I have asked them to send me out a Netopia, but he said they cant guarantee that but will try, if not they will send another Zyxel for me to try
If that doesnt work, i'll be scrapping it and buying a decent one.

Good news for all Monaghan eircom customers.

I got a call from Tech Support this evening saying that the exchanges will be upgraded in April 2010.

Ahh well. Better than nothing, right?

I'm in Limerick and i'm only getting terrible ping times off the Limerick server on speed test around 200ms.

All the others Dublin, Galway , Sligo are all around 30-40ms.

Is there something wrong with the Limerick server?

    what exchange are you on?
I'm on the Pallaskenry exchange and getting brutal packet loss of 25% between 5pm-12am every evening...
Getting really sick of this now.

I'm on Clarina exchange and the pings last night were fine until about 2am then they were averaging around 1000ms to boards.ie.

    Seem ok this morning

    Called eircom again this morning.

apparently they tested it and found the line was ok......tested at 12 noon 2 weeks ago. the problem is in the evenings.

no engineer ever checked out the line even though i was told twice that they would.

I was put onto a manager then.

manager seemed decent. Said an engineer will be out in the morning. Im expecting a call tmro.

When i asked about the exchange upgrades he said he couldnt comment as they only get the info about 2 weeks before its going to go ahead.

    Any joy?

    I'm still waiting on a call back.....from 2 weeks ago :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭iknorr

yup, engineer guy was out today. He was extremely helpful and honest. A breath of fresh air compared to the usual monkeys in eircom.

tested socket from wall to exchange...everything was fine. I had a dodgy phone when i was speaking to eircom but , it was only used that time. Disconnected at all other times.

The cables were also changed in the exchange to another "quieter side"

It hasnt made a bit of difference. The guy said give it sometime and see how it is this evening.

Speed is currently 1.5mb with a ping of 209... 23% packet loss.

Ill be calling the tech support manager again in the morning. Im not going to let it go this time. I want answers!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 931 ✭✭✭Xennon

yeah, I dont think the contention problem is at the exchanges so moving to a 'quiet' dslam wont make much difference, it seems to be from the b-ras on that the problems occur. To me it looks as if the backbone from the b-ras on is just getting maxed out processor wise.

From what Ive read here there only seems to be one b-ras for limerick and a lot of other neighboring counties and that's b-ras2.lmk.limerick.eircom.net

Im pretty sure that a lot of the bottleneck occurs here. i get the feeling a lot of people around the limerick area are running through this bras... can ye confirm this?

During the day I see no packet loss to b-ras2.lmk.limerick.eircom.net, however at the moment its up to 54%. That's a pretty unacceptable level.

it's a fúcking joke at this stage...talked again to the tech support guys last night and he admitted it's an exchange problem but taht the engineers are not giving him an ETA for a resolution.
Complained bout this and he advised me to made an official complaint about it.
Did so so Eircom have to ring me within 10 days with an ETA.
The funny thing is Eircom reps are travelling around the country trying to get people to sign upto Eircom.
For my package (7.6meg =€67 pm) they're offering it for €47 with free line rental for 10 months.
Not only that but the rep claimed that by the end of March Eircom were upgrading all their packages for free and that 7meg users would get a free upgrade to 24 meg.
He also claimed that Eircom would do away with the line rental to stop ppl from moving to other ISPs.
Of course my mate fell hook, line and sinker for it and signed up on the dot today even though his line has previously failed the broadband test but as of today can now miraculously receive broadband according to the rep.
I'm very tempted to make an official complaint about eircom..how the fúck can they be going around offering 24 meg packages and I've yet to see anyone on boards getting close to it?? With the way the exchanges are in at the moment I can't even get 1meg..right now my speed test is below...
    FÚCK YOU EIRCOM

    PS..I'm in Limerick as well

meh... i was getting 0.15mbps speeds there the other night and random disconnections. rang support and he wasnt helpful at all. didnt even recommend an engineer come out.

not on a limerick based exchanged btw :P

im on the limerick exchange too. terrible quality after 3pm..

may i say; BT Residential broadband pullout is the worst thing thats happened to the development of Broadband in Ireland. Come back BT!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭iknorr

have anyone upgraded to 24mb from 7mb or 3 and noticed some decent speeds?

Edit... I just got off the phone with them, they want to try another router - iv already tested it with another bt router and have been told 99.99% chance its not the router. I should have the new router tmro.

At this stage im just playing the game with them now until all tech support scripts & procedures are exhausted...
