I'm currently looking at buying a new pair of headphone's leaning towards the Grado 325i's. there was a similar thread in dance but I think this should get a bit more exsposure

Just looking to see what other people are using and how they find them.

    What are you currently using?

What do you like about them?

What genre of music do you listen to most?

Currently using AKG K271 MkII's for anything that needs great sound quality. Sound great, closed ear so they don't leak sound and look **** cool... except when certain people (such as me) wear them. Like most AKG studio headphones they have one attachment and a halo going over to the other ear, so certain people look like morons in them (which is why I don't go out in public with them.) They have some cool features like an automatic shut off etc, but they're really designed for studio stuff. Lovely sound though. Not too overly bassy but the bass is very precise in them. Worth checking out and not too expensive compared to some comparable ones (think they're about €150)

    Currently using Sony MDR-XB300s.

Ridiculously comfortable (I can use them for hours upon hours without them feeling in any way uncomfortable), and damn affordable (under €40).

Not the greatest set of headphones I've ever used, but give the comfort and the price, I think they're a winner.

Got the Grado RS1s and they are just amazing. Will never use Sennheisers again if I can avoid it. Haven't used the 325s, but they are a super company, so I'd imagine they are top drawer for the price. Got them in the States though - seem to be a lot cheaper there.

    Wow, nice.

What are you using to drive them?

I have Sennheiser HD555 which I don't really like, too 'airy' on the ears and lack depth. Not bad though and I might need to run them in more from what I have read online.

I also have Bose 'Around-Ear' headphone which are good, very comfortable but still lack something.

HD25 then for DJ use which are great - amazing sound but I don't like them for longer spells of listening to music, my ears get a bit hot - they are obviously designed to fit tight in terms of pro use etc so in my experience not good for general music listening.

Would love a set of Grado's, can't justify it though for a while yet!

I'm not sure I belive in all that run in/burn in I'm sure it loosen's the driver over time, but I think that airyness etc is just the signature and it doesn't suit your ears?

I have the grado SR80i's I think you can pick them up cheap enough now, they're very coloured and detailed.

People say they're not great for dance/electronica etc but I have yet to find a genere that doesn't sound great with them.

Yeah in relation to the airy aspect that is just a personal preference but in the case of these headphones also it makes the music sound distant. I have always understood that with speakers at least you needed to run them in for optimum performance and in more recent years it seems to be the case for better headphones.

Going back to when I was a wee 16 year old lad and working part-time in Harry Moores (for more years than I care to remember!), one of my first jobs there was to wire HIFI separates in peoples homes, so when the guys sold a separates system, I had to go in a taxi to the persons house and set it up - anyway, it was always a given then that speakers had to be run in for about 20-30 hours... or so I was programmed to say anyway :pac:

Re Grado, these are what I want... in my dreams!

I have 3 really good sets.

Pioneer HDJ1000, which are what i use to mix with it.

Sony V700, which i used before he Pioneers.

And the old classic Sehnheiser HD 280 Pro's (made in Ireland).

None of they are the very best, but I wouldnt pay more than 150 for a pair myself.

I'd love a pair myself, I just couldn't justify the price tag.

The 325i is suppose to be very similar and about half the price.

did they sell grado headphone in harry moore's?

Yeah it would be a tough one to justify to myself, let alone my wife! - Yes Mrs Felixdhc, I just spent nearly 1000 quid on headphones!!!

No, back then we were pretty limited in terms of headphone choice - from what I can remember we would have had the usual such as Sony, Pioneer and Sennheiser but memory a bit fuzzy now to be 100%. I don't know of anywhere in Ireland stocking Grado now even?

Only Belfast now. Very little left now in terms of audio specialists in Ireland.

    Denon AH-D5000
Really nicely balanced headphones. I've owned open headphones before that were lacking in bass, and closed ones where the bass overpowered the mids and were fatiguing to listen to after a couple of hours.

On the D5000s the bass is solid but it doesn't overpower the mids or highs. They are equally happy at playing vocal or acoustic music as electronic music. I often wear them for hours and they never get fatiguing and are physically very comfortable. The sound signature is warm and has presence but not too upfront.

They are expensive, if they're outside your price range, check out the Denon AH-D2000 which are similar. IIRC the D2000s have the same drivers but have plastic earcups instead of wood and different cabling. It's generally accepted that the D5000s are better headphone but the D2000s are 90% there and represent good value for money.

This thread inspired me to give the HD 555's another shot and I'm very glad I did. Every night since Sunday I have listened to several albums and I'm feckin loving these headphones now, got totally used to the fit etc and the sound is great... straight into the headphone jack on a CD separate so absolutely no loss of sound, unreal.

I use Philips SHP2700 headphones. I only ever use them when I'm listening to music at home. They're fairly cheap iirc - they're sturdy, sound great and are comfortable. I'd listen to all sorts of music but mainly rock, classical and hip hop.

I've been through a lot of headphones, but am currently using Grado sr60i's. The sound is great, bass doesn't overpower like some.
They weren't cheap, but the plastic used feels quite cheap and fragile, and I can't see them lasting very long.
The sr80i's and sr325's felt like the same quality of plastic when I tried them out.

It is fairly cheap the bulk of the cost is going into the amazing grado driver ;)
You could always swap them out for woody cups

If you're reluctant to shell out on the very expensive Grados then maybe read up on the Allesandro MS1, 99 dollars delivered anywhere.

    http://www.alessandro-products.com/headphones.html

I have them and they're great, plenty of love for them on head-fi.org and they're so much cheaper to get than grados.

I have SR 80i's I'm happy enough, I don't think I have the ear to apreciate anything beyond that up the chain e.g. the rs 1's etc
