What Grinds My Gears

As most of the Ranting & Raving forum won't relate to us, let's start our own thread dedicated to those things that annoy you in games!

    For Me:
Lag - Really annoys me. Especially these days now that I'm supposed to have a good connection - whatever about back in the 56kb modem days, these days it's a real annoyance. Example: Just there, played a game of Modern Warfare 2. The last game I played was very laggy - cost me at least 2 kills (that resulted in me dying instead). Almost had the worst incident though - found a guy on the roof - decided to knife him (why not? :D), moved close, screen jumped - had gone past him...Luckily he didn't notice so I was still able to get him in the knees but still!

Snipers - All part and parcel of the game. The only reason they annoy me is because I don't posess that same skill set...Jealousy ;)

Noob-hating - Everyone has been there - a beginner...And yet, people will rage on people not doing so well. We're not all superstars! And neither are you or you'd be making some money out of gaming rather than thinking you're a hero because you can top an in-game table. Leave the noobs alone - yes, you're going to play on the team with beginners or bad players but get on with it...Casual games of soccer can be a laugh for all (even the guy with no ball control or skills) but yet, gaming (online) often cannot.

Leaderboards - In a way, I do like them - gives you something to aim for, etc...But they should not be held in the high regard that they are - they can be boosted, glitched and don't always give a full representation. Want to know who the best players are? Look to actual tournament settings (especially on LAN) - those are the best players...And you will often not see the "leaders" anywhere near that arena!

    🤪

Get an on-the-fly adjustable mouse and sniping becomes a breeze ;)

Anyway, what really grinds my gears is non-skippable cut scenes. Sure, I'll watch them the first time, but the second, third and then fourth time it begins to really bloody annoy me.

For me it is poor or overcomplicated control schemes and tough difficulty curves in the initial stages of games.

Often gets in the way of me getting into games.

Games designed with the sole purpose of making you repeat difficult sections again and again (on easy / Normal). I hate this throwback to 80s & 90s gaming where you basically get shafted for no good reason. I`m all for hard modes, but sometimes a game has crap design. Case in point too human, at certain points you just mogged, theres nothing that can be done. Then you die, and your punishment is a 20 second cutscene and you revive not too far away. Playing the game on easy I got an achivement at the end for dieing 100 times. Getting through sections like these is just pure luck and not down to skill in any way or form.

Likewise with Ninja Gaiden 2, anybody who finishes it on hard isn`t some gaming god, just a looper who sat down for a couple of weeks solid and mashed there reload button.

People who use 1337 5p34k in their gamertags (I'm talking about XBL). I don't mind if it's just the one or two letters, or at the start or end of your gt, but when you've ENTIRE GAMERTAGS written in 1337, it's absolutely ****ing retarded... No justification for it.

As well as that ... n00bs... Not Newbies, they can be forgiven. But n00bs, people who profess their skill at a game, their superiority, their knowledge, and then suck major balls. I just don't get it, you wouldn't mind if they were bad and new it, but these people just refuse to open a ****ing manual, or play a goddamn tutorial because they're inept. This is blatantly apparent in L4D 1 and 2. People there's a singleplayer for a reason, play that first, know your way and how to play, then join us.

    Unskippable cut scenes.
Games that start out reasonably tricky, but once you level up the 2nd half of the game gets piss easy, Fallout3 and DA:Origins mainly.

Being nickle-and-dimed for DLC. Mainly DA in this case recently, you pay $X amount for around Y hours of gameplay in the original game. If the DLC keeps this ratio then I'm happy to give more of my money.
But the DA DLC has been promised as being 2-4 hours of gameplay which isn't bad if it costs a fiver, then you get it and play it through in 30 minutes. Sucks ass.

Games that ask you if you're sure you want to continue your game...
Seems extremely trivial, but it makes my blood boil a little every time I have to choose a savegame, then press A/X/enter to confirm that I actually want to play the damn thing.

    Television shows perception of games

where cast are playing on a modern console, the game outputs *Blips* and other 16k sounds from the 1980’s
plus the cast seems to think playing a game involves over-zealously smacking buttons and waving the controller up and down

    Or this kind of crap!

Video games references in The Simpsons and Futurama. Apparently, Donkey Kong is the latest thing in Matt Groening's library.

    Online:
Little squeeky American and English kids are just really annoying!

Every new glitch that people find is explioted way too much.

    Lag!

    People qutting early.

    Offline:
    Bad controls

Really bad texturing (When you can see the big dirty lines where a texture ends)

    Un-skippable cut-scenes

When games have a sudden leap in difficulty.

Loading screens that break the atmosphere of a game

When you have to go miles towards the next goal, especially when it was racing games where if you lost a race, you had to drive back to the start line the other side of a map instead of a resart race option.

People who piss off on their own in team based games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭sarumite

People playing really loud music with the mic on

Unfair gameplay....punish me for doing something wrong or reacting too slowly, not because the overall game mechanics are wrong.

Sh*t controls.....yes, I am looking at you Mirrors Edge.

Activision.....enough with the sequels already and no, I don't want another stupid lump of plastic sitting in my living room which can only be used for one game.

nintendo. Ever since i heard that the only reason there are 2 toads in the new mario game on the wii is because they are the same shape as mario, therefore easier to program and the fact that zelda or peach are never controllable characters is because they are too lazy to put in code for the dress, they have gone down in my books.

Its not that i want to play as those characters, but its proof that the once magical soul that got me into games has now turned into a money hungry machine more interested in a quick buck than creating something special.

That being good at games doesn't get you women.

Whatever about unskippable cutscenes - I hate unskippable logos when I turn on a game. I know it was made by X, I know it was published by Y, I don't care if it works better with Z graphics card. Even worse is if they're more than logos, but short videos instead. I keep mashing Esc/Space/A/B/X to try and get to the game quicker, even though I know it doesn't work.

People who lump games into the button masher category when they're not.
If said people could refrain from slamming their foreheads off the buttons for 2 minutes and actually learn a combo or two, perhaps they might get a bit of enjoyment from them.

Games that are not part of the button masher category Bayonetta, Devil may cry, Ninja Gaiden.

Games that are released before they are finished or releasing lazy ports, eg. Empire: Total war, GTA IV (PC). It seems as if every non Valve/Blizzard PC game needs to to be patched to death before its playable. When I pay €30+ for a new release game I expect to be able to play it straight away. If I was willing to wait 1-2 months for a patch then I would have waited 1-2 months for the price to drop . And they wonder why pirating is so rampant...

    Actually this is mine.
Not the Nintendo thing, but rather the notion that games companies are just like every other company and exist just to make money is somehow wrong and unacceptable and HOW DARE THEY!

Of all the childish traits the average forum posting gamer displays this one really fucking annoys me.

I think that is a chicken and egg thing though.....they know that people will pirate the game so they have to lower the productions costs, the result being that the game needs patching...as result people choose to pirate the games rather than pay for a broken game, and around and around we go.

I kinda disagree.....gaming is part of the "entertainment" industry. Gaming comanies, like musicians etc, should be able to make money, yes. However I think they also need to have some love for the field. You see the difference in a game with passion (Batman: AA) and where its all about the money (Halo:ODST).

This is what I'm on about, firstly batman:AA is as much about the money as Halo:ODST is, to pretend otherwise is silly.

Second it's a lazy complaint, what exactly does it mean "all about the money"?
It's a meaningless soundbite, the only thing i can come up with is that people are livid that a game they don't like, like say Halo:ODST, is popular and sells well, so they're sneering at companies doing what they were set up to do.

Achievements/Trophies for every tiny little action in the game, or for things that you are definitely going to do during the game. They should be for either doing something particularly well or for doing something slightly unusual.
    Starting the game trophy
Congratulations, you have been awarded the starting the game trophy for starting the game
    Stepping forward trophy
Congratulations, you have been awarded the stepping forward trophy for taking a step forward
    Two steps forward trophy
Congratulations, you have been awarded the Two steps forward trophy for taking two steps forward
    ...
    ...

I could not disagree more....yes the people who made Batman: AA obviously wanted it to sell well, but you get the feeling that it was also a labour of love for them. Halo:ODST has about as much love in it as a westlife cover version.

To clarify: I think game developers with a successful franchise can get lazy and put out substandard games in the belief/knowledge that people will buy the games and lose interest in any artistic integrity in much the same was as happens to some musicians.
