"A network cable is unplugged"

I was playing some online poker earlier and out of the blue my connection dropped and a message popped up saying "a network cable is unplugged". I dual boot windows xp and linux and am plugged directly into the modem. There is no problem with the cable at all. I rebooted into linux and the connection was working fine and I could connect to the net. I went back to windows and it was still down. I tried unplugging the modem and reinstalling the ethernet card but I still get the same message "a network cable is unplugged". Any ideas what could be wrong and how I could fix it?
