I have similar problem for over a year now. I got Upc to change modem and check wiring,updated routers firmware but internet still turns off couple a times a day.Sometimes it turns off and on for 20-30 mins and this is very annoying.
Ive called them million times by now but they say that my connection is fine and they don't see any disconnects. I'm tired of dealing with them...

Try change your DNS settings (on the router if possible/preferred) to the ones from opendns.org - see if that helps at all.
