Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

$58 Ring Flash from Brando

Just spotted this on Gizmodo and thought it might be of interest :)
Lens-mounted LED flash rings are a great resource for properly lit macro shots, but they're usually pretty expensive (think $150). Enter Brando's budget version.

It's almost certainly crappier than the full-priced models, as is Brando's wont, but hey, at $58 I'm perfectly willing to accept a few deficiencies. It can light up in either the full circle or a semicircle on either side, and is powered by 2 AA batteries. Pretty solid deal for something that usually seems unnecessarily pricey.

Has anyone here any experience using one of these cheapo macro ring flashes? Wondering how it compares to its expensive cousin ?

There seems to be quiet a few cons with it
Pros: It comes at an affordable price and is a good solution for the CASUAL macro shooter who cannot justify the price of a dedicated ring flash.

    Build quality is okayish.

Cons: Fitting this to the 430ex is not easy, the flange is wider than the flash head and despite my efforts to fit the velctro strap as tight as possible it tends to slide forward. When this happens, the adapter is no longer "sealed" to the flash head and when the flash fires some light gets dispersed instead of going into the ring.

Also, the rubber of the flange is quite hard and at the bottom protudes against the "elbow point" of the the flashgun.

Other Thoughts: The 430ex is not the most powerful flashgun out there and with this adapter it gets quite dim. Make sure you run the flashgun with full charged batteries.

Bottomline: Buy this if you want to play with macro photography for a while.

Do not buy it if you plan to do serious macro shooting (get a true ring flash instead).

Do not buy it if you intend to shood handheld, because it will not stay in place!

    I wouldn't buy one
