RTE 1 at 8.30 Ear to the Ground on the 19th January are doing an investigation into the billion euro industry of puppy farming.
According to the ISPCA Ireland is now the puppy farming capital of Europe, might be interesting

Was that tonight? Thought the puppy farming was next week. It'll be on the RTE player anyway if it was on tonight.

Sorry folks, the Irish Times weekend magazine had it marked down for showing tonight under TV Choice.
At the end of the programme they announced they would be doing puppy farming next week.
Still that gives us plenty of notice to set recorders or to view it next week.

I've just finished watching this (I SKY+ it as I was out), I can't believe that there were people being interviewed who thought it was ok to farm dogs like cows. Granted the program showed the more up market (if there is one) set ups ie. the kennels were clean etc. but the dogs got little to no excerise, little or no socialisation, just kept in sheds. They never said what happens to the bitches once their breeding life was over. They seemed to breed with no consideration for genetics or breed related illnesses. They had no problem saying that the dogs were not pets they were a business commodity, I was rather shocked by just how blasé they were about it, they really saw no wrong in what they were doing, unbelievable!!!!

Just finished watching it myself, also have sky +!! This was exactly my feelig too, they thought there was no difference between farming cows and sheep and farming dogs, and they reckoned as long as the dogs were kept in clean conditions it was fine. And technically I suppose the dogs aren't being mistreatetd, but the bitches all seemed afraid, wary and undersocialised to me and certainly I wouldn't like to have one of the pups that hasn't been brought up to be a pet by a caring person.

If we were only breeding dogs to eat them like we do cows then fine (not saying I agree with eating dogs, before I set anyone off!), but they're bred to be sold as pets. I know how much time and attention it takes for me to bring up my foster pups so they're ready and confident to go into a new home, there is no way I could do that properly with even 3 bitches at the same time, never mind 100.

How anybody can get in front of a camera & try to justify their "farming" is beyond me  Bitches & their whelps completely contained in their kennels, no socialisation, no freedom to exercise etc.

When one of the reporters questioned one guy about what exercise/freedom they get they justified the complete lack/absence of it by saying that they don't miss what they never had! Another guy said that his dogs get out of their kennel about 3 times per week.

It's up on the RTE player now:

While I would say that as far as puppy farms go, the ones shown in this report seem to have pretty decent standards and conditions, I'm still absolutely raging at this report.

This is basically an advertisement to steer farmers towards puppy farming.
They made a gesture at being "objective" by letting the SPCA voice their concerns about excercise and socialising ...but basically running around in a field three times a week and having a radio playing in the whelping shed seems to cover both adequately (in their opinion).

I'm not at all happy that my TV licene paid for this report
