Any one familiar with an ivy; Hibernica. I believe it grows quicky and gives good coverage.

    1) How fast does it grow?

    2) I need to plant it along where the wall meets concrete path...any suggestions most welcome as I would like to avoid breaking up the path, but it must get its soil somehow.

    3) Any suggestions for an alternative ivy type...I would prefer a large leaf, with as much colour as possible and fast growing.

Hi, I have grown some ivy hibernica, its native and had dark green leaves year round,

    1) It depends on the size of the wall ??? and the strength of the plants you buy but I would estimate about three growing seasons to fill out and cover a 3 ft high wall.

    2) I'v seen it grown in pots and beds at base of walls but I used a jack hammer to break the concrete.

3)There used to be a specialist ivy nursery in Wicklow, called Ivy leaf..do a google search to see if they are still in business. and Future Forrest in West Cork that gets mentioned on here a lot would also be able to advise you...I believe hibernica is one of the most vigorous but just takes time to establish at the beginning

Hibernica is a common dark green ivy which will grow very vigorously, root at every opportunity and isn't particularly pretty. It is quite capable of taking down a wall (it is wild in the field beside us and grows up the outside of the 6ft wall. It was left to grow for a couple of years and so much piled up on top of the wall that a strong wind brought down the wall.
It is the stuff that grows up trees and telegraph poles and is regarded as a noxious weed in the US.

As regards prettiness, thats only your opinion (which you are of course entitled to) I also know of old listed buildings with Ivy attached , it prob says more about the standard of construction of the wall if it falls down from Ivy growth than anything else
