Some of yiz may remember that Regional roads became the responsibility of the NRA in 2009 and Now Dempsey gave them local roads too. Christ :(

Local authorities have been allocated €411 million for the upkeep and maintenance of local and regional roads this year.
Last week the Minister said no extra funding would be made available to local authorities to repair roads damaged by floods or the extreme cold. Mr Dempsey also confirmed that local authorities will retain the power to set speed limits on local and regional roads, saying the function was “too big a job for any one agency”.

Great idea by that genius Dempsey. Take €411m off the local authorities in one go and give it to the NRA who have no roads staff.

Most people doen't even KNOW what their road is called, L32322 or something.

So we must mail a picture of the potholes and GPS co ordinates to info@nra.ie from now on instead of calling the bloody council , must we? :(

    must we?

Well, you can if you want, but there's no point. The answer is in the original article - LAs remain responsible for the maintenance and upkeep.

    Relax.

The NRA has been given the responsiblity for the 'administration of maintenance and repair works on regional and local roads' - a transfer from the Department of Transport.

There's already been a thread about this: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055693622

It doesn't mean that regional and local roads will become the responsibility of the NRA.

It simply means that the responsibility for administering the central government grant to local authorities will pass from the Department to the NRA.

Read this for more information: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=62465939&postcount=18

It makes sense since the NRA's staff have procurement experience and experience in setting national standards.

Hopefully, this will mean that the NRA will use it's procurement experience to get better deals for local authorities (for purchasing materials etc) and will set national standards for maintenance and repairs to regional and local roads that local authorities will have to adhere to.

If done properly, it might mean an end to threads like this: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055802911

I'd trust the NRA far more to maintain roads than councillors who only want votes. At least the NRA are more neutral than the local authorities.

Hopefully it would mean that the NRA could put the maintenance of local roads out to tender...
