Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Maybe wrong forum feel free to move.

The father in law has a cannon mv700 analogue camcorder. He wants me to convert the tape to dvd. I have searched for software to be able to read it on the laptop but can't find any. I use Magix software for my own movies. Does anyone have any idea what i could use to be able to load it onto the laptop and convert to dvd?

Keep it simple i am a bit thick when it comes to computers!!:)

    Thanks

I don't understand the 'Analogue' part. The Canon MV700 listed on the Canon site seems to be a normal DV tape format camcorder.

    http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Camcorders/Digital/MV700/

Is that the camcorder you have?

Is there a Firewire port\plug somewhere on it? (under a rubber flap or stowed away somewhere)

Forums discussing the MV700 mainly suggest using a firewire cable plugged between the camcorder and a firewire port on your PC\Laptop. There also seems to be S-Video, but Firewire will give you the footage 'as recorded' by the video camera.

One way also might be to use the following if you have a video recorder that you can link to the pc:

See told you i was thick! Ya thats it. I read about the fire wire but don't have a fire wire port. And am trying to keep costs down.

Thanks Biggins ya that might be an idea. Use the tape and record directly to the laptop from the video.

Firewire cards are as cheap as a tenner. Firewire is best because there is no loss of quality transferring the footage from the camera, no conversion takes place. Whereas with S-Video, you're always going to get worse quality as you process the video further along, editing etc..

The footage can be transferred over and kept as a master, to convert to whatever you want, a DVD, DivX, whatever.

If Adverts.ie was working, I'd suggest you make a request there. Avoid Maplins, they'll charge you close to 40 euro..

You can then use the likes of WinDV (http://windv.mourek.cz/) (Free) to transfer the footage from the camera, to your PC\Laptop.

Ok bear with me here. Wouldn't i need a firewire port on the laptop to be able to use it?

Yes, but you can fit a firewire port to any laptop with a PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot.

Most laptops worth their salt will have an expansion slot of some kind. Hopefully yours does.

Not a bother. If you can wait a few days, I guarantee someone on Adverts.ie has a suitable Firewire card stashed away with your name on it.. ;)

Once you have a means to connect your camera to the laptop you can use Windows "Movie Maker"(free) to do it.

    It's really straight forward.
