Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

From a quick look around it gets some excellent reviews for a notebook in this range.

Anyone here any views on it ?

fwiw you can get it nearly 50 euro cheaper if you can get down the north.

Not a bad price, considering the 3 year warranty, however, I'd prefer to go with the Dell Inspiron 1561 for €526, even though it has a 1 year warranty, as it has a better spec for only €26 more.

What are the differences between the new I3/I5/I7 intel cores and existing dual cores intel has?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭madmoe

As far as I know i7 is top of the mill, i5 next and then i3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_i7).

I would not be buying a new laptop right now without one of these processors and 802.11 /n and possibly a USB 3.0 port on it as well.

    Cheers,
    M

The new Core line of Intel processors, i3/i5/i7, besides being faster and more powerful than the previous Core 2 line, are smaller in size, 32nm compared 45nm, which in turn leads to lower power consumption and better battery life. In addition, instead of the integrated GPU being placed on the motherboard away from the CPU, it now resides on the same piece of silicon as the CPU, which leads to even greater power efficiency and battery life.

You can see both the CPU and GPU beside each other in the image below.

A bit off topic but a SINGLE core i7 processor was powering this at CES a few weeks back - http://www.notcot.com/archives/2010/01/ces_intel_infos.php

    They are VERY powerful processors!

Thanks for this recommendation , was in the market for a laptop for around €500. The same spec but with a 17.3" screen is actually the same price which I am going to pick up.

Wound you be not better spending a extra 40euro and getting the Intel® Core™ i5-430M (2.26Ghz, 4Threads, turbo boost up to 2.53 GHz, 3M cache) instead of the i3

They ared slightly better that the Core 2 processors but a hell of a lot better than those piece of crap dual cores that are everywhere.

I remember seeing in a review that even the most basic core i3 available atm is about 30% faster than the best pentium dual core, the T4400 IIRC. No way would i get a laptop for more than 400€ atm, without getting at least a core i3 chip

Give it a few months and i3s will be everywhere in the 400 range of laptops. Unless a laptop was going seriously cheap i'd hold out.

I agree. With the next batch of Core CPUs being released in Q2 2010, the i3 CPUs will become even more prevalent than they are now and prices for the current i3 systems will drop.
