I look down occasionally. Tried typing without looking down and it was mostly right, got the odd letter wrong though (usually pressing the one beside it).

I can't after donkeys years on PC's, I still have to look at the keyboard to type something but I do it fast!
On the other hand, my other half can type without looking at the keyboard, well are you one of those amazing species? :D

Little fingers over the "A" and the "L" is the trick. It was the only typing lesson I ever had and it works.

Astonishing results..... what with this being t'internet an' all.

Yes, yes I can. See I did it just there..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,005 ✭✭✭Ann22

Yeah, I can, punctuation and all. Have to check starting off to see if my fingers are positioned right but after a while the base keys get slightly warm so I know they're right.. for numbers though I have to look. If I do look at the keyboard at all I get confused and make mistakes.

When I've the same phone for a while i can text quite well without looking too, grand in emergencies when you're having a conversation with someone, you don't want to be ignorant and you really need to text something important. I can look at them and chat while my fingers going ninety under the table:o.

I learned to touch-type years ago in high school on a Smith Corona manual typewriter but I've picked up a few bad habits over the years. I don't need to look at the keyboard though.

    Yep, doing it right now...

Of course I can type without looking at the keyboard!
Dont need to look at the screen either to see if its correct because it ALWAYS IS!

I can type very fast, but I mix up words frequently. 'Who' can become 'You', for example. It's very random, and not just simple spelling mistakes. Even if I proof read just after typing, I can still miss this. Yet, if I come back after a while and proof read, I can then see the mistake.

I usually end up correcting my posts here hours after I made them. Irritating as it makes me look uneducated/stupid.

Yes, yes i can and i'm doing it right now :pac:

"""I.m om amdwarmr moagld withovt pvemictivf text. I?ll try type thhr pfntewmle withovt joojing.""""

    Oh dear.

But yeah I can. Listen to this you'll love this. We had a teacher that thought us to type in college who had a great Northern accent (couldn't quite distinguish where exactly), but (get this!) she was nicknamed Spacebar. Becase in the class she'd be giving out random letters and (ohmygawd!) she'd say 'spacebar'. Ah memories. Good class though.

Did you ever finger type out that gigantic programme that came with the C64 and after three hours of painstakingly correcting errors as it wouldn't work - you finally get to see a little man cross the screen with a baloon

    :D

I'm awesome. I've been touch-typing from the age of 2!!!
(not necessarily true, but I have been typing since the age of 2, no ****, I'm deadly serious.)

I'd just end up tippex-ing the letters onto one of those

I cannot. I never did typing in school (we didn't have computers which is pretty bad because it wasn't that long ago!) I got a PC in college and got most of my friends to type out my essays for me. :o
But I have a 'teach yourself typing Skills' CD Rom somewhere which I may dig out now because of this thread. It's terrible typing with two/three fingers when if I just had the patience to, I could type properly. does anyone else try the 'right I'm going to type this correctly, which all fingers on the right keys' and then lapse into 'this is too bloody slow, get the index fingers out' or is it just me? :(

I am, however extremely quick on the number keyboard and NEVER have to look at the screen for that. :)

Um, 95-115wpm* depending on how much caffeine I've had. Without looking.

    Yeah I can do it

Funnily enough I did one of those speed tests today cos I wanna know my words-per-minute score for applying for data entry jobs and the likes.

My max was 74 WPM, about 71 WPM on average. Dunno if that's good or not tbh  My hands can't go any faster !

Yes I can. Learned the basics with one of those typing tutors and got in plenty of practice in a horrible job where I had to do a lot of data entry. I'm glad those days are over but it is a useful thing to have. That, and the knowledge of where the bodies are buried :p

Ah kinda. I have to keep glancing down. I can type fairly fast but with a few glances.

I did the speed test here and my speed was 16WPM with 6 mistakes. So, I certainly think 74WPM is pretty okay. :o

Ya, we were made to learn it in school, hours of typing frf frf juj juj on old electronic typewriters and trying to use typewriter tippex strips to correct mistakes. Its a handy skill to have though, made preparing college reports/essays so much easier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,005 ✭✭✭Ann22

Just did that wee test..59wpm with 1 mistake. Got 62wpm before that but 9 mistakes.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,869 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

That's damn good. Anyone who can do about a word per second is a genius in my book! It annoys me that my school didn't teach such a basic skill, typing would be more useful to me than feckin' algebra.

It's actually possible to type 120 wpm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭we'llallhavetea_old

But then we all have qwerty keyboards in Ireland.

I used to consistently do around 120-128, so yes, it's quite easily possible.

Now I average at about 100ish I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,582 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

I usually only look at the keyboard to find out if typo'd letters are somewhat close to each other :D

Can type about 100wpm myself...and yes, without looking at the keyboard ;)

Actually I too swap the key caps around. Good oul IBM Model M makes it too easy. Keeps a good percentage of people from being unable to use my PC. Which is nice.

Wanted to bring it into work but I'm in an open plan office and it sounds like a machine gun when I'm in full swing.

by typing this i will either prove that i can or that i cannot!

    oh, looks like i can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,929 ✭✭✭Raiser

I can't type w/o looking at the screen. I can't type properly either, but I am fast enough at typing with an average of 42wpm. Result: A scandalous amount of typos and having to re-read everything before clicking submit reply.

    Shoulda proof-read your Username :D

Lots of my typed text looks like the above, must learn someday - how long does it take roughly? :(
