Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have just started my family tree and wonder how I might go about accessing Birth, Baptism & Marriage Certs from the churches. Do I have to make an appointment to see the records and who do I contact to do so. Thanks for any information in advance.

You goto your nearest library and they should have the records, you ask the person in their if you can see the records and then you tell them and they will give it too you , though it'll be very hard too see sometimes depending on the dates and the person who wrote it, though i noticed the 1700s where far easier to read than the late 1800s!

You contact the parish priest of each parish I guess. Though you don't have to do this until you've exhausted the civil database records which are orderable from the Internet.

Guys: I'm blue in the face saying this: read the sticky at the top of the forum to get all the basic information. Your nearest library will not have the information (as Owenc mis-informs you). Your county library might have your own county's records for the census, but not parish records. You want the National Library and should really only contact the parish directly if their records are not in the NLI or you happen to have a tame priest there.

Well the library in the town has the records for every church in the county, but its probably just only here sorry for informing you.

just to add to what pinkypinky has posted - here's a link to an index of the RC parish records held on microfilm by the National Library of Ireland (NLI) in Kildare street : www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx

Church of Ireland records are available in the Representative Church Body Library in Rathfarnham : http://ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=about&id=31

I've gone back as far as 1783 so far...having lots of ancestors with unusual British surnames makes it easy, the more common Irish ones are trickier though, so far only made it to 1829.

Unique British surname got me back to 1591. The branch I'm really after only goes back to 1864. I mean, how many O'Sullivan's in Cork can they be?
