Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2003 Vectra, No power when pulling away?

    Hi,

I have a problem with my 03 Vectra.

When cold, there is no power pulling away, its very sluggish. There are no engine / warning lights coming on.
I've been googling this and a common problem that keeps appearing is the MAS (Mass Air Flow). If the wrong around or mix of cold air is not getting through, it causes this lack of power. The car is fine when running for a few mins and warmed up?

    Has anybody seen this before?

I also read that its easy enough to check and I know a few mechanics, but before I start looking at it, would somebody be able to point in, roughly where the MAS is on the engine?

This is the best pic I could find (Its a diesel, my engine is a 1.8L petrol)

    Thanks.

I have a Vectra too but haven't experienced the problem you describe. Maybe it's a clogged EGR valve?

I find this website invaluable for all things Vectra:

    Whats an ERG?

Yeah, I've seen that site, I must sign up, just said I'd ask on here first see if its a common problem!

One thing I did notice that when I slow to a stop or parked on a slight gradient the car doesn't roll, it just stopped, almost like it has assisted hill start, which I know it doesn't, I'm wondering if the breaks may be locking on or something?

Its kinda hard to diagnose, because there are no warning lights and its hard to describe whats wrong with it... its just not driving right and lacking a little power?

From what you've said, it does sound like you may have a binding rear brake caliper (common enough). As for the power loss issue, the MAF sensor is located between the air box on the LH side of engine and the turbo piping. Back probe the connector with the car ignition on using a suitable multimeter and check for a 5V supply. Then with a friends help, start the engine and back probe the signal terminal and earth the other probe and check for a steadily increasing voltage output on the multimeter as you raise the revs from idle to around 4000 rpm. This is easier done with an oscilloscope/scantool but im asuming you havent one of these to hand. This will at least tell you if there is a blatantly obvious problem with the MAF, though ususally an EML will illuminate once the MAF starts to go bad.
Could also be a coked up EGR, or a faulty boost pressure sensor....
    Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply and PM Azure.

After a spin today to town I blatantly heard scraping coming from the rear as I was driving slowly, and it got quicker as I speeded up, so I'm defo saying its the caliper sticking.

I'm going to get the missus uncle to take a look at it, as he's handy with cars (mainly older classics though) if he can't do anything I will let you know!

I'm based in Waterford though... Hopefully it wont be too big a fix!

    Thanks again!
