My OH's brother in-law found a litter of puppies on the building site he is working on. All except one were frozen to death, no sign of the mother, so they were prob dumped by somone.

We have adopted him now, the debate is on going if we will keep him. This only happened tonight.

We have been looking for a companion for our 2 yr old rottie x ben, who seems to love him just sitting there watching him sleep, then licks him to death when he wakes up.

But we haven't a clue as to what breed he is. Any ideas?

    here is a pic.

Poor little mite. Well done for rescuing him. It's hard to tell at that age (at least for me), but he looks a bit like a rough coated Terrier cross. He's very cute anyhow!

oh my god thats horrific, poor puppies!!!! Have you brought him to the vets for a quick check up?

    Edit HE IS GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can be really difficult to tell breed in a pup that young when there isn't even a mother dog there. I would guess terrier x of some sort but they can surprise the life out of you when the hit 6 months and suddenly turn into something else!

Only got him about 6 30 today, will bring him along tomorrow to make sure he is ok. This is my first time having a pup. we got ben at 4 mths old and he was already massive. So don't really know what to feed him, just giving him luke warm milk with a small bit of mushed up, wet food. What do I need to get tomorrow food wise?

I'd skip the milk for the moment, it can give them the runs as they can't digest it, especially if they're not very well. Your vet will be able to give you advice on what pet food to buy for him but any puppy food softened should be fine

Agreed, mushy dog food for this evening.

After a vet check they may advise you on certain food or certain feeding for a bit, if the pups underweight or anything.

So SO cute though, and you're great for taking the little thing in. I can't imagine how anyone could get rid of puppies like that. I feel so sorry for the little souls lost.

One thing though, maybe this little chap was meant for you, especially that your other dog has taken to him, it would be nice if ye could keep him if ye were able to :)

I reckon there's a lot of terrier in him!

I'd say possibly cairn terrier or glen of imal... what a dote! :)

What an adorable little pup :). I'd say he's a terrier mix, I'd be surprised if he got much bigger than your average Jack Russell. Dog nuts steeped in warm water would be fine for him for the time being, try and get him to drink too if you can as I'd say he's probably dehydrated if he hasn't been feeding from his mother in awhile.

He looks so gorgeous, and well done you for giving him a home after such a terrible start, people make me so angry:mad: there are folk out there who would have taken the litter in without just dumping them and leaving them to die, as for the breed of your little fella, like most here I think he looks border terrier/cairn terrier, and such a cutie, good luck!

Definitely keep away from cows milk, it can play havoc with canine digestive systems. If you really want to give him milk you can get a puppy milk formula (Whelpi or Lactol). However, good quality natural yogurt is well tolerated & can ease an upset tummy.

And of course well done for giving him what will obviously be a great home... :)

Thanks everyone for the advice. OH will bring him to the vets today. He pee'd on her 3 times last night! Ben was not impressed! Whats the best way to train him? Is it the newspaper method (i.e. cover an area in newspaper, then when he pees put him on the newspaper, then make the area smaller after each time or to just put him out the back for a few mins when he goes in the house? Is putting him outside at all before he's had his vacs dangerous, even for a few mins?

Also we might look into getting him a crate, are they expensive? Does anyone have one to sell cheap?

jeebus the poor brother in law, that can't have been nice for him :( fair play to him for taking the little fella home though, and to you for looking after him!

the picture of him with Ben sussing him out is priceless, so cute! :o

the newspaper method you described sounds spot on to me :)

A crate should be cheap enough, I got one medium sized for €46 and they are well worth it. Just don't get it too small as you want it to last until he's grown up. Argos and petmania sell them as well as some local pet shops.
The vet may give you a better idea of his adult size, but my guess would be terrier of some sort, hard to say when you don't know age but i'd guess he won't be big(cairn size or so).
As for the training, as soon as he wakes, drinks, eats or assumes the stance, bring him outside and wait.
If you use a crate, depending on his age you may have to get up and let him out 3-4 times during the night. Just set an alarm and gradually increase the times between. Both of mine went 12-7am most nights from around 4 months.
Best of luck and well done.

He looks quite like a Cairn to me with his head shape and snout. Image of my two when they were pups. Congratz :)

Well done for taking him in. Poor pup. God love the others. Yet again people baffle me  The photo of him with your rottie is great! :D

Hey Ivan, he is a little stunner. Maybe a glen of imal cross? I know pedigree food is normally crap but the puppy food with rice is good. Very easy on their little bellies. Make sure you keep us updated with pictures please. :)

Took him to the vets, who reakons he is about 6 wks old, he had ear mites and worms. So we were given ear drops and the vet wormed him. They also gave us a free bag of science plan puppy nuts! Was told to bring him back next week for the vacs. Getting a free crate off OH's sister, so will see what size it is.

He is a very tenacious little fella, no fear in him at all, as you can see from this vid.

He is just too cute, good on you for saving him!!!!! We need more people like you to make up for the scum who dumped the litter in the first place!

As you mentioned, the vet said he's just six weeks, so its great you have your other dog for him to socialise with! once he has had his shots then socialise him with as many dogs as possible, as he will have missed out on learning canine body language from his littermates.

Where abouts are you located? If your anywhere near cork city, im opening a daycare in the next few weeks and the little fella can have a month of free daycare if you want to get him mixing with other dogs, he deserves it after the start in life he got!

I'm up in Dublin, thanks for the offer though. Have a few friends with dogs so no shortage of that, and when he gets bigger will bring him to the dog park. Just hope we can toilet train him properly! Ben (other dog) was a dream to train, he just did anything you told to!
