DCB - Dublin's worst enemy?

I wont, our of kindness, refer you to, for example, the usual photoshots of Dublin footballers attending the launch of some sort of GAA promotion in Croke park which we can regularly see clottering up the sportspages at any time of year, nor indeed the trailer for Sunday Sports which I have seen around six times tonight alone and which feature Dublin footballers...

Not the main focus of sports coverage at the moment though, which was the point I was making. There is some coverage of gaelic games all year round, a lot of which focuses on Dublin. My point was this should make it easier for the DCB to negotiate sponsorship deals, so they should not be applauded for doing their job. One poster mentioned this sponsorship deal as a reason to applaud the DCB, I disagree. However, I do think that the promotion of hurling in Dublin over the last number of years and the issue with Fennell (if all is as it appears to be) are issues where the DCB have conducted themselves well

he did, he said your posts are embarrassing to say the least.

so he was commenting on your posts in this topic in a nice economical way, which, believe me, is a blessing as BB's posts tend to be on the large side. I for one endorse his new policy of brevity.

    The Irish Times
FORMER DUBLIN football manager Paul Caffrey has said Eamonn Fennell is Ciarán Whelan’s “heir apparent”, and called for a swift resolution to Fennell’s troublesome transfer request from O’Toole’s to St Vincent’s. Caffrey was speaking in Croke Park at the launch of the Cadbury Under-21 football championship, as one of the judges to the competitions Hero of the Future award.

“It’s a mess this whole transfer thing and it needs to be sorted,” said Caffrey. “Sometimes adversity can make you much tougher and I think that’s probably done that to Eamonn. He looks a much tougher guy now. I can understand both sides of the argument but in limbo is not the place this should be. There should be a definite decision made. Eamonn Fennell’s best years, as a midfielder, are in the next three or four years and he needs to be able to play football with a club, go and play football and get into this number nine jersey for Dublin and hold onto it for the summer.”

Fennell’s appeal against the unsuccessful transfer request is due before the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) next Monday, although in the meantime he has delivered two fine performances in Dublin’s league matches against Kerry and Derry.

Caffrey believes Whelan won’t be changing his mind about his decision to retire last summer, but said Fennell is ready to step into his shoes. “I’ve spoken to Whelo a couple of times, and he’ll miss it terribly. But it’s very, very hard when you’re Ciarán Whelan’s size to step away from it, and go back. I think for a corner-forward or a wing half-back who is at his fighting weight all the time, I think it’s easy enough for them to step back into the fray but I think for the big guys, big midfielders it’s nearly impossible to go away for six months and then step back into it.

“I think Ciarán made his decision knowing right well there will be temptations further down the line.

“It’s incredible to think Whelo and (Paul) McGrane and now Darragh Ó Sé are gone, but who’s to say Eamonn Fennell won’t turn into an icon in Dublin football over the next 10 years? I definitely do think he’s up to the mark.”

Kildare midfielder Dermot Earley – also a judge on the Hero of the Future award – believes talk of Ó Sé being the last of his generation is premature: “There’s still a lot to be said for having a Darragh Ó Sé type player. You don’t see players like that every day, and when a player like that goes you say it’s the last of a dying breed, but I’m sure there’s someone to fill his shoes, and no better team than Kerry to find that player.”

Earley admitted he was also a fan of the experimental “mark”, and expected it would become more frequent as the playing conditions improve over the coming weeks: “I do think it will survive. I think now is not the time to analyse it, because there’s not much high fielding in January and February, with the conditions and lack of fitness. Hopefully March and April we’ll really see the benefit . . . I think it was brought in to stop the crowding when you come down with the ball. I think we will see a bit more of that in March and April. I don’t think it’s slowing down the game.”

    back to the point...

i think its sick what has happened to fennell. its malicious petty politics. for shame on the dcb for being drawn down to the level of the obvious personal attacks that the clubs are manifesting. the gaa stands by its ideas of playin for your home team and any different will destroy it, but its crap like this which will inevitably destroy its values with people constantly trying to hurt everyone else instead of trying to better themselves.

what kind of message is this sending to kids? always hold a grudge, concentrate more on ruing others instead of working hard and youll do ok...

the "play for your parish" rule is absolutly idiotic and naive in dublin. hallow ideologies is all it is. i live within walking distance of 3 clubs in dublin. ive played for 2 of them as well as one across town. i moved teams twice because i had to if i wanted to play. at different years the teams wer a joke, we never trained, anyone with a pair of boots played and nobody improved. and this was all before u16. obviously the teams fell apart and if you didnt move clubs you either switched sports or hit the drink and drugs. (and lookin back on the people i still know from those teams the latter is the favoured option) so what if its not the same context as fennels but its the same opportuinty for politics. we had some inter county players at different ages on that team, myself included, and if someone from another club had spotted what was going on it could have ruined alot of peoples playin careers, just like whats going on now.

to deprive the senior team of one of the best players in the county because he wished to move club to better himself is disgusting. the gaa likes to do everything different from other sports but restricting players is not done anywhere else for good reason. if fennell pisses off and plays soccer all the better for him

Pillar reckons that Fennell has the ability to be as good as Whelan if you cant take our word for it.

I think Fennell has the ability to be even better than Ciaran Whelan given time but it remains to be seen if Fennell can handle the pressures of the big games in the championship. In times when Ciaran Whelan was doing his best in All Ireland Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals when the chips were down, his teammates around him were found wanting.I remember Fennell basically winning a midfield battle against two Meath midfielders (Mark Ward and Brian Meade) in Parnell Park in the league 2 years ago.He certainly has that extra bit in tight games and his workrate is unquestionable.

He probably should of played him so, and tbh that sounds as much of a slur against Ciaran than praise for Fennell, im well aware of Fennell's ability, I have seen him play club and league games and while very effective at that level he does not have that extra spark to make it at the very top, he is a very good squad player and would be an addittion to every county panel in the country but if he is the best mid-fielder in Dublin then I dont see you making any great progress in the near future.

Premierstone, I got to agree with you on this. For me Fennell doesn't have the mobility of the top midfielders especially when it comes to championship. Yes it has improved in the games that he has played so far this year but I do wonder if he will be found out in the championship.

all due respect to the man its not a big boast winning a battle against them two lads.ward when hes bad wouldnt get a game on a junior team and meade is hot and cold too.then again with o shea and whelan gone now are there any decent midfielders left out there?

Gilroy is going about it the right way. Dublin has an excellent attack, but their defense was always very loose, if he can get the defense organised and disciplined I can see Dublin having a big say this summer.

Gilroy is definitely a man with a plan.
