    No standing back in Miltown challenge pdf_button.png printButton.png emailButton.png Written by Peter O'Connell Thursday, 12 May 2011 11:42 football-clare-v-sligo.jpg

    Clare 1-10 Sligo 1-8
The majority of challenge games are non-events with players finding it hard to give it everything with nothing at stake. This was a definite exception.
he 70 minutes, played to mark the opening of St Joseph’s Miltown new stand, incorporated a 20 man pre-half-time brawl, a follow-up skirmish in Miltown’s new tunnel, a howling wind that made it impossible to play football at times and the rather unusual sight of an inter-county manager being treated by the team’s physiotherapist. A number of superb Clare points from David Tubridy and Martin McMahon, along with a well-worked Clare goal scored by Graham Kelly also enlivened proceedings.
Both teams gave it everything in a game that wasn’t far off championship intensity, taking the inclement weather into account. Playing with an exceptionally strong wind, blowing towards the town end in Miltown, Clare led 1-7 to 0-3 at half-time.
Just before the interval Clare’s Graham Kelly became involved in a tangle with a couple of Sligo players, which soon escalated into a virtual all in, with players rushing to the scene from all over Hennessy Memorial Park. The dispute temporarily erupted again as both teams headed down the tunnel at half-time.
Graham Kelly, who played some outstanding first half football, also upended the visitor’s goalkeeper, Philip Greene, when a dropping ball landed into the keeper’s hands just as Kelly arrived. Greene was immediately bundled into the net only to emerge enraged and looking for the Miltown man. Shane Brennan was brought on at half-time for Kelly.
Sligo came much more into the game in the second half and David Maye’s goal brought them to within touching distance of Clare.
However, points from Rory Donnelly, Niall Browne and Dara Blake helped Clare stay in front and to record a morale-boosting win. Although Darren O’Neill and Alan Clohessy both limped off, neither injury is a long term one.
Having played a near full strength Armagh team two weeks ago, Clare will play their final pre-championship challenge on Thursday when they play Leitrim in Roscommon.
Clare will play Cork in the Munster quarter-final in Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday, May 22.
The incident involving Micheál McDermott and David Rooney’s misdirected line ball had its origins in a disputed call. Linesman Michael Rock wasn’t certain whose line ball it was but McDermott was adamant that it was Clare’s. However, Shane Hehir awarded it to Sligo who had another go at it once Clare physio, Seán O’Meara was finished tending to the temporarily stunned Clare manager.
This was after Rooney’s initial line ball hit McDermott full force in the side of his head. He remained upright though, although he did appear to be momentarily on the ropes. Once McDermott got his bearings, he had words with the Sligo player, who insisted that the incident was accidental.
As if all of this wasn’t enough, the gale force wind was supplemented by a torrential downpour about ten minutes from full time. Indeed such was the strength of the wind and rain, master of ceremonies for the day, Willie Healy, was very worried that he might have been marooned in the new press box, within the 1,200 seater stand.
“We could be trapped here for the night,” he forecast sagely to a silent press box as the wind and rain intensified outside. Willie also kept the press box regularly informed as to how the Manchester United v Chelsea premiership match was going.
Clare: Joe Hayes; Kevin Hartnett, Laurence Healy, Mark Tubridy; Martin McMahon, Gordon Kelly, John Hayes; Gary Brennan, Niall Browne; Darren O’Neill, David Tubridy, Graham Kelly; Rory Donnelly, Joe Dowling, Alan Clohessy.
Subs: Ger Quinlan for Darren O’Neill (injured), Shane Brennan for Graham Kelly, Michael Foran for Joe Dowling, Dara Blake for Alan Clohessy (injured).
Referee: Shane Hehir (St Joseph’s, Miltown).

Eire Og win U16 A football championship tonight over Ennistymon :D

I think scoreline was 4-10 to 1-7. C'mon the townies.

Fair shocked that the Mill were beaten by Tulla. Really thought they would get far in the championship this year but i suppose its early days yet.

Clare lost heavily in the Munster minor football championship this evening.

Score was 1-16 to 6 points i think. Got off to a horrible start as Cork scored a goal in first 30 seconds. Cork were much the fitter, stronger and technically better team and got a deserved victory. Cork's number 13 & 14 were huge lads( someone needs to check there birthcerts) :p

Headed down to Clare Abbey then for u21 hurling challange between Clare and Cork which Clare won. Not sure of the score though, around 3-17 to 2-16.
From what i saw, our full back line is our weakness once again but we looked well drilled and once our forwards get quality ball they will be a match for any team. McGrath missed a few handy frees in second half and then we conceeded 2 soft goals.
Team that started second half was:
    1.K Brennan
    2.D. Nash
    3.B. Glynn
    4.P Flanagan
    5.S O'Holloran
    6.P O'Connor
    7.L Markham
    8.C. Chaplin i think
    9.K Ryan
10.A Lynch (best Clare player of 2nd half)
    11.S Golden
    12.C. McInerney
    13.D O'Holloran
    14. Heagney
    15.C McGrath

Subs that came on were Podge Collins and Boyce for 13 and 7.

you have got to be fcuking kidding me  They are beasts although number 14 wasnt that great. Good strong run to the all-ireland is there again for that team anyway. Extremely well coached and some cracking footballers especially in midfield and half-back line.

    MSFC - Clare 0-11 Cork 1-23

Very disappointing result, but expected defeat nonetheless. A year to forget for footballers.

SH Challenge match - Clare 2-25 Galway 3-16

Great win for the hurlers who dominated the game, and some great points too. Miserable evening for a match though!

report from the Examiner on the SH challange game.

CLARE had six points to spare over neighbours Galway in a senior hurling challenge to mark the opening of a new pitch at Pairc Uí h-Aonghusa, Clooney-Quin last night.

Galway had goals from Aengus Callinan and Adrian Cullinane in the 10th and 11th minutes but an in-form Nick O’Connell helped the hosts to a 0-16 to 2-8 lead at the break. Both managers utilised their benches in the second-half and local star Fergal Lynch grabbed Clare’s first goal. But Galway’s James Regan silenced the home support with a fine goal moments later. Clare finished in style with Jonathan Clancy hitting their second goal.

    Scorers for Clare: N O’Connell (0-8, (4f, 1 65), D McMahon (1-1), J Conlon (0-4), F Lynch (1-0), D Honan (0-3), C Ryan (0-3) (3fs), B Bugler, P O’Connor, J Clancy, E Glynn, P Donnellan (f), C McInerney each.

    Scorers for Galway: A Harte (1-4, (3f), D Burke (0-5, all frees), A Callinan (1-1), J Regan (1-0), J Gantly (0-3), K Hynes (0-2), N Cahalan (0-1).

    CLARE: P Brennan. P Vaughan, C Dillon, E Glynn. J McInerney, B Bugler, P Donnellan. N O’Connell, M Earley. J Conlan, F Lynch, C O’Donovan. D Honan, D McMahon, C McInerney.

Subs: C Chaplin for Vaughan, P O’Connor for Donnellan, L Markham for Earley, J Clancy for O’Donovan, C Ryan for Honan, D Tuohy for Brennan (all half-time), G Quinn for O’Connell (55).

    GALWAY: J Skehill. D Joyce, J Lee, GO’Halloran. A Smith, A Cullinane, N Donoghue. N Calahan, D Burke. J Regan, K Hynes, C Donnellan. A Callanan, J Gantly, A Harte.

Subs: E Goode for Skehill, B Hanley forDonnellan, K Burke for Callinan (all half-time).

    Referee: S McMahon (Clare).

I have a feeling that Bugler will now be the center back anyway and NOC has nailed down a place at midfield.

Given up on football after attending the minor game. Until we improve the skill levels at club level we have no hope at inter-county level. Club standard in Clare is pathetic where all the emphasis is on defense and hitting each other. Bring on the hurlers for the summer, minors,U21 and dare i say it seniors for success :)

    Senior hurling championship round 2
    25 May 2011

Following the opening round games two weeks ago, the race for the Canon Hamilton gathers momentum this coming weekend as eight round 2 games take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    Friday

    Group 3

Sixmilebridge v Wolfe Tones @ Cusack Pk 7-00 PM

Pre championship favourites Sixmilebridge were lucky to see of Clarecastle last time out and will look for a better performance in this game. They will face a battling Wolfe Tones who although they have decimated by emigration still contain a number of experienced players. The "Bridge" will be expected to clinch the win here with players like Caimin Morey, Tony Carmody, Niall Gilligan, Shane Golden, Paudie Fitzpatrick and Tagdh Keogh in their side. Wolfe Tones will look to the experienced quartet of Declan O'Rourke, Barry Loughnane and Gareth and Bobby McPhillips along with Mark Regan and Aaron Cunningham to upset the odds.

    Verdict: Sixmilebridge

    Saturday

    Group 2
    Whitegate v Tubber @ Shannon 2-00 PM

After disposing of Cratloe in round 1 Tubber will hope they can supplement that victory with another one here on Saturday against Whitegate. Their East Clare opponents impressed last year but so far this year have failed to replicate that form and lost out to Inagh/Kilnamona in round 1. Tubber look to be the form team and with players such as Mark, Conor and Clive Earley, Ronan and Eamonn Taaffe, and Pat O'Connor amongst their ranks they should maintain their 100% championship record. Whitegate will be hoping that Clare senior Brendan and John Bugler, George Waterstone, the Fahy twins (Ian and Andrew), and Trevor Kelly can get them off the mark.
    Verdict: Tubber
    Group 3

    Tulla v Clarecastle @ Shannon 3-30 PM
Tulla will hope to build on their first round win over the "Mills" with Clarecastle hoping to pick up their first points of the campaign. The "Magpies" were unlucky not to have got a result from their game with Sixmilebridge and will hope to bounce back to winning ways in this one. Key to their cause will be Pat Kelly, Stephen O'Halloran, Tyrone Kierse, Jonathan Clancy, Ollie Plunkett and Seanie Moloney. As for Tulla they will hope to record a second win on the trot with the likes of Philip Brennan, Mark and Andrew Quinn, David McInerney, Paul and Aidan Lynch, and David McInerney expected to be in their starting fifteen. It is a hard one to call with little between the sides.
    Verdict: Draw

    Group 4

Newmarket v Kilmaley @ Cusack Pk 6-45 PM

Another good tie is in prospect here with Newmarket hoping to keep up their 100% record and draw specialist Kilmaley looking to pick up the two points. Last time out Newmarket easily beat Ballyea and Kilmaley shared the spoils with Crusheen. In what is sure to a tight affair Newmarket should have too much for Kilmaley in the end. Key to the "Blues" cause are Colin Ryan, James McInerney, Stephen Kelly, David and Enda Barrett, and Sean O'Connor. Kilmaley have experience in the form of Diarmuid and Conor McMahon, Alan Markham and Colin Lynch along with youngsters Daire Keane and Colin McGuane.

    Verdict: Newmarket

    Sunday

    Group 1

    Killanena v St. Joseph's Doora/Barefield @ Sixmilebridge 12-00 noon
Newcomers Killanena showed great fighting spirit last time out against Smith O'Brien's where they shared the spoils. It was a similar case for Joseph's who had Clonlara on the rack for most of the game before the 2008 champions levelled matters in the last few minutes of the game to record a draw. Josephs will be expected to see off the 2010 intermediate champions here with the likes of Ken and Damien Kennedy, Ivor Whyte, Kevin Dilleen, Enda Lyons and Marty O'Regan in their ranks. Once again Killanena will look to main man Mark Flaherty to keep the scoreboard ticking and hope that players of the calibre of Enda Collins, Noel Sheedy, Mikey Noone, Alan and Fintan McNamara, produce the goods if they are to upset the odds.
    Verdict: St. Josephs

    Group 2

    Cratloe v Scariff @ Sixmilebridge 1-30 PM

The 2010 champions, Cratloe, will hope to bounce back from their opening loss to Tubber when they face a Scariff side that will be making their entrance to the title race this Sunday. Cratloe will seek a better performance than last time around and should account for the East Clare side that will hope to cause an upset here. Players such as Sean Collins, Conor McGrath, Cathal McInerney, Liam Markham, Sean Chaplin and Barry Duggan will lead the Cratloe charge. Scariff will look to Barry Murphy, Ross Horan, Cathal and Diarmuid Nash, Michael Scanlan and Conor McNamara to produce the goods if they are to cause an upset.

    Verdict: Cratloe

    Group 1

Clonlara v Broadford @ Cusack Pk 5-45 PM

This clash of near neighbours is sure to be tightly contested but one would expect that Clonlara would have enough firepower to see off Broadford. In round 1 Clonlara drew with St. Joseph's while Broadford had a bye in that round so they will be eager to hit the ground running in this one. Clonlara will seek a better performance this time out with likes of John Conlon, Nicky O'Connell, Darrach Honan, Cormac and Domhnall O'Donnovan, and Paul Nihill in the side. For a Broadford side hoping to recapture their form of 2009 they will have James Gunning, the Chaplin brothers Craig and Cathal, the O'Brien's- Aonghus and Aidan, and Padraig Hickey in their team.

    Verdict: Clonlara

    Group 4

    Crusheen v Clooney-Quin @ Cusack Pk 7-15 PM

The defending champions drew with Kilmaley in their first outing while Clooney-Quin will be making their championship entry in this game. In what has been described as the toughest group a win for either side would be the perfect tonic before round 3. Crusheen can call on Paddy Vaughan, Cian and Cathal Dillon, Joseph Meaney, Gerry O'Grady and Fergus Kennedy to lead the charge of the "Blood and Bandages" as they defend their crown. This Clooney-Quin side contains key operators in the shape of Conor Harrisson, Derek Ryan, Fergal Lynch, Cillian and Martin Duggan, and Cathal Egan. It is expected to be a tight affair with Crusheen getting the nod.

    Verdict: Crusheen

O'Donovan a doubt for Banner men
    27 May 2011

Domhnaill O'Donovan has been rated as a major doubt for Clare's Munster SHC semi-final next month with a ruptured disc.

The news comes as a blow to Banner County boss Ger O'Loughlin, who described the Clonlara man as "one of the leaders in the squad" after he had been one of the team's better performers in last month's NHL Division Two final defeat to Limerick.

It means that O'Donovan will also miss this Sunday's crunch Clare SHC clash between Clonlara and Broadford at Cusack Park.

"I was a bit sickened when I saw the results of the scan. I didn't think that there was much there but the scan showed up the problem," O'Donovan told The Clare Champion newspaper.

"It started with a pain in the week leading up to the Limerick game and it got worse after the game, sending pains down the leg. An MRI scan showed up the problem."

The defender has between now and June 19 to prove his fitness to O'Loughlin for the provincial semi-final against either Cork or Tipperary.

To say this is bad for us is putting it lightly. Our backs situation is now even worse for June 19th.

So we playing Tipp, IMO we should be very worried. Will we keep it pucked out they will be raging hot favourites. Not a hope do we have unless they are too over confident and we could catch them on the hop.

Tipp are going destroy us, the only hope we have is if their bus breaks down on the way to the match

it doesnt look good for us alright although Cork created a lot of scoring chances in the match and there were plenty of spaces in the Tipp defense at times. But stoping Tipp's forwards is another is another story and one which our defence will hardly cope with.

on another note, Kilmaley drew there 6th county championship game in a row :pac:

The Tipp forwards will destroy us, they got 3 goals against a good Cork defence, they destroy our wet paper bag defence.

That's Kilmaley undefeated for 2 years now, some record :)

People said the same when we were due to play Waterford last year. ;)

I don't expect our lads to win, but I can see them come out guns blazing. The last 20 mins are where we could fall apart.

Great scoring from Clancy from midfield in fairness. Think we got a few more injuries out of the game which we could have done without aswell.

Clare rapped up there preperations for there championship match v Tipp by loosing a challange match to Cork last night on a score-line of 3-14 to 1-18.

    Clare lined out as follows:

    brennan
    vaughan
    cooney
    mcinerney
    donellan
    bugler
    o'connor
    nikky
    clancy
    conlon
    collins
    lynch
    mcgrath
    honan
    d mac

Another 3 goals shipped to an understrength Cork side with Cooney at the full-back. Really fear for us v Tipp with the amount of goals we have conceeded up against there serious forward line.

Why he has persisted with Cooney at FB i just dont know after his league final performance and also having Durmuid McMahon in the forwards after being taken off after like 12 mins in the same match.

Things keep getting better... Markham and DOD out for Sunday.
    By Cliona Foley

    Tuesday June 14 2011

CLARE'S hurlers look set for a big defensive reshuffle after losing key corner-back Donal O'Donovan to a back injury ahead of next weekend's Munster semi-final against Tipperary.

They will also be forced to make changes at midfield as Liam Markham is out with a broken finger.

Darach Honan is suffering from a groin injury, but he is expected to be ready and looks likely to start, after coming off the bench and causing havoc against Limerick in the Division 2 league final when he scored 1-1.

"There's a few fellas carrying niggles and we're not sure if they'll make the whole 70 minutes so we will probably have to reshuffle things," admitted manager Ger O'Loughlin. "However, we don't want to disturb our pattern too much."

But O'Loughlin conceded that O'Donovan is a massive loss, not just for this weekend but probably for the rest of the season, after a scan confirmed a disc problem.

"Donal's had problems with his back for a while and he's a really big loss because he was one of our strongest players against Limerick and had slotted well into what was a problem area for us," O'Loughlin said.

Losing their best corner-back couldn't have come at a worse time as the Banner prepare to face Tipperary's lethal full-forward line -- Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett scored 2-9 between them against Cork first day out.

O'Loughlin says that Clare were devastated at losing their league final to a late Limerick rally, including a spectacular Kevin Downes goal.

"Winning the Division 2 title was a main objective so we were fairly shattered by it, especially as we had that game in our control," he said. "But we just had to get over it and set ourselves a new goal.

"And they don't come any bigger than Tipperary -- they're the best team in the country right now."

"This is where we want to be. We were complaining during the league that we wanted to be playing at a higher level. We've certainly got that now so it's up to the lads to meet that standard.

"I'm just hoping that they will go out and express themselves. There's no pressure on us at all."

Brendan Bugler, who didn't play in the league final, was selected at centre-back in a challenge match against Cork last week and there is speculation that O'Loughlin may yet make changes at full-back and centre-back, as well as the enforced one in the left corner of defence for Sunday's mammoth challenge.

Tipperary have no significant injury worries and there is growing speculation that they could have All Star midfielder Brendan Maher back on their bench.

Maher, the reigning Young Hurler of the Year, who won senior and U-21 All-Ireland medals within a week of one another last autumn, suffered a broken ankle in mid-March in a freak accident while pucking about at home.

The injury was expected to keep him out of the Munster championship, even if Tipperary reached the final. However, he did the warm-up with his team-mates when they played Cork and acted as water-boy for the team.

He returned to training with his club Borrisoleigh the next day and has been doing light training since. There is now speculation that he could be back on Tipp's bench next weekend, even though he hasn't even hurled competitively with the club yet.

Elsewhere, Cork midfielder Lorcan McLoughlin, who helped the Rebels dominate that area against Tipp, looks set to miss the qualifier against Laois next weekend after fracturing his thumb playing for Kanturk in the local IHC last weekend.

Well I'm a firm believer in being optimistic, and while it is hard to see a good result this weekend I think we can take some positivity from Limerick's performance against Waterford last weekend.

We don't have Liam Markham or Dohmnaill O'Donovan for this match, but we have to come out guns blazing. Goals might help us stay afloat, and we will need to ensure Tipp do the opposite.

Thought this game was in Limerick no? Ye always do alright in Limerick in fairness to ye. Ye faded in the league final against Limerick but the fitness has surely increased a ton after that. It would be a monumental achievement if ye were to win this lads but there's always hope.

Have some smashing young hurlers who could be great in a few years time.

Match is on in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday. I can honestly say I've never been so pessimistic going to a championship game before, and I have been to see the footballers player Kerry in Killarney.

Ok if its on in Limerick I'm definitley going :)
After seeing Limericks performance last week I'm confident we can come out all guns blazing :D

I'm sure they'll come out all guns blazing, but any team going out looking to Diamaid McMahon and Fergal Lynch for inspiration, well, it's going to take a lot.

I was just looking up the odds for Sunday, the footballers are shorter odds to beat Down than the hurlers are to beat Tipp.

I'd like to see Cormac start for his twin, offers the same thing.

Ryan can't win his own ball. It's a huge problem, you could see it in the U.21's as well. Only for his free-taking he would rarely score.

Spot on, I remember was it two years ago in the Gaelic Grounds he was unbelievable against Tipp, got MOTM even though Tipp won and I think he scored 8 or 9 points, I kept an eye out for him then for the next few games he played and he was awfull, every now and then he comes up with the goods but nowhere near consistently enough.
