Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Creaky clutch

Got my 2003 honda jazz today and after about half hour of driving, the clutch started to creak really loudly every time I push down/up on it. I have to bring it in for a service anyway (I thought just for oil, etc.) but I'm not sure what's causing this, and do I need to go to a Honda dealership or could a good mechanic fix this easily? I'm guessing it had been temporarily fixed up with WD40 or something before I got it :(

Anyone know why it's making this noise by any chance?

Any problems with the clutch other than the noise? Does it feel alright?
Does it make a noise in neutral too, just pressing it down/up?
Is the rubber on the pedal ok/worn?

Didn't check pedal, or when it was in neutral, but yeah it works fine when changing gears apart from the creaking noise..

I can check the pedal and neutral function in morning, the car is at a friends house, free parking!

Do you think this is going to be hard to fix?

It's more than likely a dry pivot in the gearbox - it's a bit tricky to lubricate but should only take a couple of minutes if you know what you're doing.
Call into your local Honda dealership or specialist, it shouldn't cost a lot to rectify.

If you pop into a garage they should be able to identify it quickly as it could be a number of things and its hard to say without seeing

Thanks for that, what a relief! Am I best ring the Honda dealers first and see can they fit me in tomorrow?
There is a secondary thing of the steering wheel being a bit dry- as in when I turned it during a sharp left turn it felt stiff, but didnt notice it again and did a drive Dublin to Galway today so had plenty of time to see.

Could they be connected? Or did the steering wheel thing just happen cause it hasn't been driven a while?

Sorry just remembered to mention how when on straight road even though the car is facing straight the steering wheel needs a tiny bit of help to keep dead straight, otherwise there is a little veering.. more so than any car I've driven. Noticed it on the motorway.. maybe it was crosswinds? The car is quite light I guess.

Go to a filling station and check your tyres:
Standard Front Tyre Pressure: 32 psi
Standard Rear Tyre Pressure: 30 psi

Then take it out again on the motorway. If it still drifting then change the lane, still happens? Cars will sometimes drift because an ever so slight bank in the road. It could be tracking too, or it could be something else.

Check all your fluids, top up or replace.

My car also creaks when i push the clutch down, as long as it is all working correctly, nothing to worry about. Just turn up the radio a little so you won't hear it ;)

My old prelude did this and the starlet also does. If you can trace the clutch cable to the engine bay and on to the gear box you will see where it enters the gearbox. There may be a rubber seal. On mine, you can pull this back and spray in some silicon/wd40 onto the pivot. Problem solved. It's hard to see in and you may have to do it a few times especially if you use wd40. Makes the clutch movement easier afterwards.

Is this going to be a permanent fix for it? I read that WD40 can be hard on cars and I was kinda hoping for a permanent fix!

Heading out to Des D'arcy Honda dealer today with it. I had called Tom Walsh Honda dealer but they wanted 39.00 euro to just bring it for test drive and diagnose the problem.. and then I'd get a quote for the work.

Noone else I rang was trying that on at least.

Every one of the new shape mondeos that I sold had an annoynigly creaky clutch pedal action. It was the return spring on the pedal.
Ford had a way of rectifying it under warranty - AKA WD40

It's easy for someone who doesn't know what they're spraying to aim the lube near the clutch! That's why it's better to get someone who knows what they're doing.

@ Pog - it isn't a permanent fix, it probably will have to be done again in the future. I worked in a Honda dealership for a while and this was something that nearly had to be done at every service for some of the cars - the civic seemed to suffer from it more so.

Well it could be the master clutch cylinder! My 06 Civic needed a replacement and it's a known issue in Honda's. It doesn't really affect the car as such but can be an annoyance when clutching regularly.

It's not a big job and should be done under warranty if thats what it is.

On the steering wheel not straight....dont get me started. It seems to be difficult to find a shop that can align the steering wheel properly. Always slightly left or right but almost never centre. I was told that it's a Honda trait in that it is difficult to get right first time. I dont buy that but I know another couple of people who have the same issue with Civics and steering wheel not straight.
