Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Flywheel problem in Octavia Q?.

[2006 Octavia 1.9 Tdi with DSG gearbox]

I've been experiencing a rattling noise from my engine/gearbox for awhile but recently noticed when I'd engage drive the noise would mostly stop. It wouldn't be there whilst driving.

So this week I'd a timing belt, gearbox oil and service done and the mechanic breaks the news that the flywheel is the cause of the noise.

Quoted me €1700 for a replacement flywheel and clutch, which is a sickner!.

However he said that he's never seen or heard of one failing and that if I could live with the noise then I'd be fine.

I guess I'm just looking for reassurances here, I've searched the net and haven't found anything that contradicts the mechanic so do you guys think I've anything to worry about.

Tbh the last thing I need to do is go spending that kind of money on repairs.

I dont know alot about them but its a common fault on those. I think it can break up and do further damage if it fails completely. Best get it done but you will certainly get a better price than that. I know the skoda dealer in mayo was quoting €1200 approx and many will do it for less.

I was thinking the same on the quote, I might actually price the job in N.I. and see what they come up with.

If I got it under or around the grand I think I'd go for it.

Do a search, lots of posts on this.

I got my clutch and FW done for €600 including parts.

    €1700 is a rip off.

Also, don't drive the car for much longer without replacing it.

Oh its been like this for as long as I can remember, actually I'd mechanics telling it it was all sorts of things but the lad in Octavia in Prussia St, Dublin explained the whole thing to me.

I'll check out Belfast on Monday of course, thanks.

Just an update, and a further 'thank you'.

I've just got off the phone to Eugene @ Tom Walsh up in Belfast and he qouted me a price of £700 (xe.com = €800) parts and labour!.

When I'm booking it he said we can talk about the price again :D

Thank you, seriously you've saved me a ton of money.

No problem. Thank the original poster of that thread as it was him that saved me the cash.

Eugene is a good guy. He actually received the wrong part for me originally when doing the FW on my mondeo. He had the car fully stripped down before he found out. He re-booked me in very quickly and got the correct part without charging any extra for the lost day.

Also, rather than ordering and fitting a new starter for me (since a dying clutch will cause dust to get into it) he just cleaned out the starter. Never had a problem since with it.

He was very prompt on updating me on progress and charged exactly what the quote was.

Your quote will vary depending on the price of the parts i guess.

Out of interest I rang Ford Dublin on my way home and they wanted €2200. Totally disgraceful for a part that pre-maturely fails.

Looks like ye Dub guys are paying way too much for having a 'D' plate on ye're cars.........;)

Any reason not to take up Eugene's quote?

I live around the corner, so it was really just down to convenience.

Tbh I'd have charged up to Belfast, but I was really stuck for the cash, again put the job on the long finger but last week the car was shaking its guts out.

By that stage I was afraid to drive the car much longer, or further. Got a recommendation for this garage off some taxi drivers and hey presto.
