Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Levins are black listed cars, at 19 I'm surprised you even got a quote, you will more than likely have to take that as I cant see you getting any other quotes

Insure.ie is a broker, so they're not the ones who will be insuring you. So they're not "dodgy". I'd say you'll struggle to get quotes tbh, ringing around is the best option, online quotes are crap.

Unfortunately Insurance Companies do tend to profile certain cars. Obviously a levin isn't your normal runabout, and they might have a higher claims history on this particular car than others. Even if you're not a boy racer (not saying you are :)), the profile of the average owner of certain types of cars tends to be, and will have a higher risk, so this is compensated for in the insurance rates. This is similar to the fact that insurance for young males, no matter the licence or car, will always be expensive due to claims history etc.

So even if you were 39 with a full licence, it would still be dearer to insure the levin, than say an Avensis with the same size engine.

If you are a careful driver, maybe try ringing Hibernian and getting a quote, and then do the ignition course. Can wipe up to 40% off the premium, dependeing on how well you do in the test. I think this is discussed in another thread, just not sure where.

As mentioned before, I do have motor insurance experience with a broker.

I'm about the same age as you and I wouldn't even consider getting one. Why?Because like you said the insurance is crippling and then you have to consider tax and the amount of petrol they would consume. My advice to you would be don't bother with the Levin, get a smaller car instead.just my two cents.

A Levin is a Toyota Corolla, right? Just buy a standard one so, and build up a NCB. Then, in a few years if you still want one it won't be so hard to insure.

    Your problem is:

    1 Your sex
    2 Age group
    3 Car type

That's three strikes. 1 and 2 you can't change, but 3 you can.

    Be safe!

I'm with insure.ie who insure me with lloyds based in london. They are pretty well known, not dodgy. I've had no problems with them at all but haven't had to make a claim. Up for renewal soon and will probably stay if they match the reductions i'm getting from other insurance companies.

You'll find it hard to get better quotes at 19. My best quotes were from nononsense.ie (fbd) and insure.ie.

thanks for that got a quote 2day from insure.ie for 1900 not bad considering i payed almost the same last year on a 1ltr so im used to paying over the top for insurance part of the joys of been a young male driver or as most seem to think a boyracer in ireland

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭Testament1

Tax and petrol isnt that bad on these. I used to drive a 2litre turbodiesel and the tax on the levin is a nice bit cheaper. As for petrol the 6 speed box is handy and you can do good mileage if ya drive em properly.

I can offer you no advice on the insurance question you ask, I'm amazed how some people have tried to tell you off for your choice of car, maybe because your 19 they feel they have the right to do so.
What I can see is you seem like a sensible young lad and you know what you want so I wish you look and hope it works out well for you.

okay m8, if you whant get levin, your hearth whants it, then go for it.

they are not so powerfull, they have alot of bhp on paper, but on roads its tottaly different story. Superstrup suspention is beutifull, but its not for amazing irish roads m8. You will be sinking huge amount of money into it.

insurance now. You are with quin direct? If you got a qoute for ather company and it really suits you then do this: go buy the levin you whant, then just call your own company, and tell them that you just bought new car and whant details updated on your policy. They will ask you: " did you bought the car allready", just say: "yes, sir" ;). then they will just replace car on policy, maybe with you quids extra to pay. Will save you the hassel to swap insurances etc...

I did same last year, i was driving clk200 and whanted mx5, when i called for qoue, i was told i need to be 30 years old ( 23 and that time). I just bought car, and called them again: got insured for 7eu extra per month... you just have to love insurance compnies.

All haters just fudge off. Its like some kind of rasist here now, if you are a young lad, then you being written of in to wall even before getting in to car! If the lads whants a sports car, let him have it. dont have an advice? Say nothing then!

€1900 isn't exactly over the odds, when I was 19 I was paying 4000 púnt on a 1.4 Ford Escort, that was over the odds!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭cian1500ww

    €1900 is brilliant, for me, 18 full licence, on a 1.9tdi Passat it's €2400 fully comp !!

  • Registered Users Posts: 74 ✭✭eire1990

if i was to switch over insurance would i be charged a cancelation fee and if so would it be alot and that 1900 is for third party only

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭pdiddy

i would say if you want the car and have the money go for it,have u considered looking for a g6r corolla there a 1.6 6 speed also, fully loaded with all extras very nice car to drive i had one for two years and was sorry i ever sold it,also as its a corolla it was no prob to insure.can be hard to find one as there a rare car

  • Registered Users Posts: 74 ✭✭eire1990

Yes you more than likely will be, your insurance company will be the only one able to tell you how much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭pdiddy

really only parts that ud heve trouble getting wud be the six speed gearbox and maybe engine think everything else u cud get from a normal corolla, but like i said if u have ur heart set on a levin go for it dont let anyone else change ur mind for u

SuperStrut parts won't be got from a normal Corolla but theres so many Levins around now you should be able to pick up some decent ones off a car for breaking by the time they need replacing. Anyway as for the insurance 1900 seems like a very good deal. I got quoted 1600 for mine from Quinn (21 years old, 4 years named driver). Id say take the quote and enjoy the car!:D

You can try this; I take it you have insurance with Quinn, then they have to insure you on any new car you purchase while your in the middle of a policy, they can charge you an arm and a leg to change over, but if you have bought the car, they have to insure you.

A good few years back i bought an jap MR2, which quinn wouldn't quote. When i phoned up to change over (i knew they didn't insure import MR2's) I just said i've already bought it and they had to say OK. As it happened they only charged me a small amount extra and they renewed my quote every year, a lot cheaper than any other company i had priced. You might get lucky.
