    I just noticed the name..

Friend of ours with a new baby are calling him Senna.

There has already been a major family row about it.

The poor wee lad will have a terrible life with that name.

We know that Sennan is an old Irish name; but is your boards name a real name?

This reminds me of the story of how Jarno Trulli got his name. Jarno is not an Italian name, it is Finnish. But Jarno's father was a big motorcycle racing fan and his favourite racer was the Finn, Jarno Saarinen.

As for calling the little lad Senna, I can think of worse. I wouldn't do it myself but I wouldn't be dead against it either. My son doesn't have a Finnish name (we live in Finland) and it hasn't effected his life.

i think Senna on here calls himself after the late racing driver Ayrton Senna

I know a guy called Ayrton (he's Irish born and bred, most likely named after the driver since his DOB would range back to the Senna hay-day). Hasnt affected him at all, in fact it's quite distinctive.

Well that is why it reminded me of the Jarno Trulli story

Then maybe the guy that you know goes under the name Senna on boards.ie!!

I'm sure his big brothers, Boutsen and Button, will look out for him.

Like I said, it could've been worse :)

You could call the brother "Prost" and let them out in pedal cars.

    Back on topic please :)

An online dictionary gives this when you look up "senna"
    1. any plant, shrub, or tree belonging to the genus Cassia, of the legume family, having pinnate leaves and large clusters of flowers.
    2. any of various cathartic drugs consisting of the dried leaflets of certain of these plants, as one drug (Alexandrian senna) derived from C. acutifolia, or another (Tinnevelly senna) derived from C. angustifolia.

Thankfully he didnt use "Senna 2"

No its not my real name, i picked it because of my childhood hero "Ayrton Senna".
As for naming a child Senna, i would have though it was more suitable for a girl than a boy.
Why are your friends picking it? Has it any meaning to them?

    Maybe you should show your friends this;

Seemingly a well know laxative, but i didn't realise until a boardsie told me, the poor young fella might get a hard time over it at school.;)

Interesting as we had not thought of a racing driver.

    But only of the laxative.

    Must be an age thing....

So that is where they got the name!

    Imagine that!

But most folk know what senna is of course; that was the concern. Imagine shouting, "SENNA!" and at school.. He will get teased rotten.

They even sell it at ASDA.

For me, I would immediately think of Ayrton Senna and have never, until now, heard of Senna laxatives!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,516 ✭✭✭irish1967

Yeah same here. Though I think the laxative will stick in my head now. ( and before anyone says it.... I know... It wouldn't stick anywhere else. ). ;)

I thought Senna is a kind of herb.

My father wanted to call me Cú Chulainn.

I'm always grateful to my mother for talking him out of it.

    :D

What is it about new dads?

In wee Senna's case, it is the father also.

Granny in this case is formidable though.;)

An Irish lady not yet of pension age describes the Friday night ritual of her childhood.....

The senna pods would be put to boil ( not in tablet form in those days ;))

Ready to dose all the children before the weekend, mass etc of course. Inner cleanliness etc...

The mere smell would send most of them running to the outside toilet with vain appeals to Mammy that that had been..... They were not spared the ordeal...Not ever... all pleas fell on deaf ears... Senna it was for each and all...

Part of the heritage of old Ireland!! An ancient tradition...
