Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    98 Corolla Tilt back, 1.3L

Just did the first brim test

    Milage: 278.8
    Litres: 32.57 (7.164 Gallons)

I work this out as 38.9 mpg. I have been driving the car easy never bringing it over 60. What do you think?

If it's the same engine as the starlet then it looks low. I get 45 out of the starbug. The corolla is heavier I'd say but not that much heavier. Do you carry pessengers?

Fine for a small engined car. What mixture of city/motorway driving do you do?

No passengers and the driving is mostly rural around Athenry. I had a feeling it was guzzling petrol.

Just been services recently, new oil, air filter, plugs and timing belt. Is there anything I can do to get more out of her?

A variation of 5 mpg is easily within the realm of 'driver influence'. It also depends on how accurate your brimming measurements are and a few other things. Bottom line, there's nothing wrong with the car. Keep checking the MPG through the next few tanks, if it falls off significantly (-15%) there might be a problem. Otherwise I wouldn't worry.

Just under 39mpg is not 'guzzling petrol'..

Jeez, I really think it is. Fill a gallon drum with petrol someday, pick it up and you will realise that it is a lot of liquid right there. And it takes all that petrol just to get me 39 miles! That sucks! Terribly inefficient. And it's shockingly expensive.

Come back diesel, all is forgiven.

On an older, small petrol engine? Not a chance tbh. BTW, 39mpg is fantastic compared to a alot of cars. Then again it's about the same as a BMW 525d.

    Luxobarge bangernomics ftw!

With same engine (1999) i easily get 45mpg. If I make an effort I get 48mpg. But I wouldnt be a hard driver in any case.

Add some injector cleaner to your tank, it will remove carbon deposits and return the combustion efficiency towards intended levels (when car was new) and therefore produce more power and as a result use less fuel.

many thanks, I'll certainly give that a try and measure accordingly

Get unnecessary crap out of the car.

While recently carting several loads of stuff from Kilkenny to Dublin (mate moving back home), my MPG in a 99 1.4 Golf was 34. Compared to its normal of around 37-38.

So its a 12 gallon (roughly) tank, so if I didn't have that stuff in the car, would have got round roughly an extra 50 miles out of a full tank.

While you don't normally have a load of around 200KGs in the the car, most people I know, me included, ride around with lots of junk in the boot such as sports gear and the likes. So getting rid of this stuff can probably help a little, especially in a smaller engined car

I drive a 1.9tdi diesel and get on average 55mpg out of it with city and motorway driving.

A little tip on how to save petrol or diesel is empty the boot. Alot of people carry lots of crap around in the boot that you dont ever need and you could save yourself a few tanks of petrol over the year if you emptied it!

thanks guys, the car is completely empty

Oh, and your high idle problem could be contributing significantly to a lower MPG.
