Rumours have it that html5 is going to Kill Flash. Personally I find that ridiculous. Flash is a powerful program surely.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing it go...

I wonder is there confusion surrounding the flash file formats for embedding media in websites and the program itself?! Or maybe it's just me who's confused?!

I'm still waiting for Silverlight or Java to kill it... take a number and get in line IMO.
The impression I get is that html5 and flash plug some of the same holes, but not all.
Until html5 impresses me and actually becomes relevant outside of tech demos for specific browsers, I'll be duly ignoring it.
What ever the case, it's being called a bit early and stinks of hype and fanboys.

I'm fairly confused about it myself. I've done some reading up on it and the initial impression I have is that it is all about the video and the plug ins. Plus the W3C do not seem to be supporting the html video tag as yet (announced in a meeting that they had).

Some browsers are supporting it and some are not i.e. it is not standardised because of issues with the cost of the patent on the h.264 codec.

A lot of info is a available on the Wired website. But what I don not get is why apple seems to continously ignore flash? Is it based on business competition or some kind of begrudgery of the power of flash?

Reaslistically, HTML5 is about 5 years behind Flash, and it still isn't supported by Internet Explorer. Adobe make no money from the Flash player. They spend millions of money on it, but really only make money on their authoring tools, if HTML5 was able to do what the Flash plugin was they wouldn't need to waste that money.

Here's some good articles from adobe on the issue. Given their bias, they're actually far more well rounded than most discussions about Flash & HTML5:
