An access point shouldn't need much configuration, if any
you just need to plug an ethernet(network) cable between the access point and one of the 4 ports on your netopia.

Connections through your access point should get IP information etc. from the DHCP on the router.

You should configure Wireless security on your access point, as a wired connection to a router by-passes the encryption on it.

What you need so, is a repeater.
These are alot of the time built into an access point.

You configure it to connect to your wireless and point it to the MAC address of your Netopia. It should then extend the range of your network.

I'm looking at buying this one, from netgear.
It functions as both an access point and a repeater.
