Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Blocking porn on the net?

    Hey all,

friend of mine just recently got his first PC and internet setup.

However, he has kids and he doesn't want them looking up any of the 'ol pornography.

Is there any simple, effective way to block porn sites from being accessed by his kids? I haven't used his PC at all, so I'm going to assume he has only one profile on the PC and no guest accounts (though i reckon he'd know how to make one) and i assume he's using Internet Explorer, though im sure he'd switch to Firefox if it made things any easier.

Cheers in advance to anyone able to help out here, as I'm a little but stumped about this myself.

    OpenDns
    Parental control (Adult content filtering)

Set Your dns servers on the pc (better still on the router/modem) to opendns, register with Opendns and select what exactly You want to block from the categories. If you have a dynamically changing ip from Your provider (most dsl), You're going to have to install software on a pc to update the new ip each time it changes

My kids see an angry pic of me when they click a blocked link :D

I use K9 Web Protection. It's free and very good. My younger sister wouldn't agree though :)

Just to note, its easily got around by manually adding Your isp's dns servers to your pc so it shouldn't be the only line of defense, but it helps. My young fella got a great laugh out of googling "funny faces", next it was "fat asses", was glad I had this setup.

The usual applies to kids on the internet, always have the family pc in a busy room, kitchen etc. not a bedroom or any room where they'll be undisturbed. Ours is in the kitchen.
Take an interest in what Your child is doing, but give them free reign, don't interfere or shadow over them, they learn pretty quickly when they're left alone and unlike an adult they're not afraid to try things.

    +1 for common sense ^^^,

I have open dns set up, but becareful, Google image search unintentionally gets around this (the picture cache/thumbnails) come from google servers, don't forget to turn on safe search and I think that recently you can apply it to all profiles on the computer.
I've tried k9 on BIL's computer, works sort of the same but it's a bit more powerful and is configurable from the computer.
Also have a kids login so they don't accientally install viruses etc.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but my query is linked to OpenDNS updater

Due to the proliferation of WiFi devices in our house (PS3, iPhone etc.), OpenDNS is the best option for me, but I've discovered that OpenDNS updater only works on the account its installed under - is it possible to install this as a service? I'm not too clever on this stuff..

    Thanks
