    1 more question ...

Seen you have a jailbroken phone , do you have Cydia Installed ? , if so when you open Cydia does it say "This device has SHSH's on file for iPhone OS: 3.1,3.1.2" ..just above the Cydia Logo ?

    It does indeed:

OK ..Thats Good News :D .
Basically when you 1st installed CYDIA you would have said YES to the question "make my life easier".
By answering yes you allowed CYDIA (saurik) save your SHSH ECID hash files on his server .(all good , stick with me ).
Now if your phone ever crashes and needs a restore via iTunes then you wont have to update your phone to the latest offical Apple firmware , if you did you would render your jaibreak and unlock (if applicable) useless .
So to answer your question about having a backup ?....
You have the best backup available , if you need to restore your phone you can now restore it via Cydias server and avoid iTunes .
If you ever find yourself in trouble and need to restore your phone , follow this is a guide I posted recently
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=64372336&postcount=4

    Now updating your firmware....
Its now just down to personal choice . I am currently nearly on the exact same settings as yourself ( 3GS , 3.0.1 ) and have no plans to update (yet) .

Do you want to update your firmware for a particular reason ?

Some people say they get a better battery life on 3.1 x fimware (This is still up for argument)

If I was you and was happy , I would sit tight .

If you still wanna update your firmware let me know , but please do not do it via iTunes officially as 3.1.3 is not jailbroken or unlockable .

    Hope this Helps .
    M.

ok been reading through this thread. I am currently jailbroken on 3.12 with no issues thanks to mixednuts...anyway my cydia says ""This device has SHSH's on file for iPhone OS: 3.13" Does that mean I am in trouble if something ever goes wrong ? (I fear it does :( )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭Stuxnet

on the contrary, you are sorted if anything goes wrong, cos those files of yours you have stored,
you will always be able to go back to 3.1.2 and jailbreak in the future, if you need to restore your phone for what ever reason

    Mac,
If your phone ever crashes and iTunes tells you it needs a restore , don't ever do a restore offically in iTunes , follow this instead :
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=64372336&postcount=4

It's a instruction on how to use those files that Cydia has stored for you ... All good my friend , you have the best backup available ;)

I was having problems with my iphone and wanted to change it so it would sync with my laptop instead of the home computer. In doing that the phone, as has been said in the thread, become locked again. With no unlock in sight and me wanting to use my phone today again, could someone tell is it possible to rollback the phones firmware and the best way to do that? Cheers

When you say "it became locked again"? did you update your firmware when you were using iTunes

Ya I thought it was best to restore the phone and update it while in the process, I didn't know it would sim lock again though. Is there anything I can do?

Mate Im afraid your stuck with it until someone jailbreaks 3.1.3.
By updating to 3.1.3 firmware you would have also updated your baseband , this would have locked your phone to offical sim carrier only.

    My personal opinion....
The vibe at the moment (Dev team ) is silmilar to what happening before 3.1x came out..... They think 3.1.3 offered no improvements , but was a attempt by Apple to fish out the next jailbreak method before 4.0 is released.
Similar happened when 3.0.1 came out , Dev team did not take that bait , waited til 3.1 came out and GeoHot released blackra1n jailbreak .
I would be surprised if we see a jailbreak before 4.0 as no one wants to show their hand before then.
Unless Geohot feels like it , but he is busy hacking the PS3 and building robot wars

So my iphone is now locked? Could I bring it somewhere to get it unlocked in one of the shops or do they rely on similar technology that gets released?
I was sure that I could rollback the upgrade if i upgraded.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

Shops are no better at jailbreaking than you can do yourself .

You can't roll back your firmware in iTunes , you used to be able to but Apple iTunes server stopped signing firmwares ( part of the restore / update process) below the current release around June July 09 .

Even if you could roll back your firmware to 3.1.2 you won't be able to roll back your baseband .

Sorry mate to be the bearer , just keep your eyes on boards.ie ... If anything gets released to jailbreak 3.1.3 you will find help here , when that is ? Is the 6million dollar question :(

My girlfiends has an old model iphone which was unlocked for her but she updated it a few months ago and been locked since. just wondering is the best way to get it sorted to go to one of the shops as was said before or is it handy enough to do yourself and if it is any advice would be great. I see the link above and i had a look at it. Would that be a good way to go about doing it?

    Thanks

    I'm afraid not .
When you updated to 3.1.3 you would have updated your baseband from 5.11 to 5.12 also .
The baseband is the part that takes care of all communications , sim , Gprs , wifi etc.
    Jailbreaking = hacking the firmware.
    unlocking = hacking the baseband.

The guide you attached is how to downgrade firmware not baseband .

Even if (for instance) you managed to roll back your firmware to 3.1.2 using CYDIA ( sauriks server) then your baseband would still be 5.12 , your phone would still be locked to official carrier.

It's simple to do peyter, I did it with mine a couple of days back and it was the first time I have ever attempted to jailbreak an iphone. It worked first time.

I'm on 3.1.2 right now with my 3Gs and its unlocked, but I have no use for the jailbreak to be honest. Can I update to 3.1.3 and everything will still relatively work?

if you are not on an official carrier, and your iphone is not factory unlocked (not tied to a official carrier) then no you cannot upgrade.

you need jailbreak to hold an unlock. you can't jailbreak 3.1.3, no jailbreak, no unlock.

[QUOTE=you need jailbreak to hold an unlock. you can't jailbreak 3.1.3, no jailbreak, no unlock.[/QUOTE]

You can jailbreak 3.1.3 you just cant unlock the simlock because the baseband has been upgraded aswell.
