Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Whining noise on 1999 1.4 Golf

    Hi,
I just started getting a whining noise from the engine of the Golf. It happens whether the car is moving or not, which eliminates the gearbox. I had the gearbox whine 12 months ago and resulted in a change of g/box, this time the noise is different and definitely from the engine bay area.

The sounds happens whilst on the road but also if I park the car, put it in neutral and rev the engine the sound appears. Any ideas on what it could be? I'm going to have a look around this evening, check any suspect hoses and if there is anything strange (oil deposits and that).

Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

Possibly alternator, water pump or power steering pump bearings, or timing belt idler/tensioner
(depending on engine type/ vehicle spec ....)

the whining noise increase with revs? If so check around cam/fan belt area, getting mine changed tomorrow because of whining noise coming from 1 of the rollers on cam belt,Could also be pump causing whine

Just to properly eliminate the gearbox, does it disappear when you engage the clutch? I had the fun of yet another dodgy VAG gearbox a couple of months back. It got to the point where I could hear it while driving as well as idling. It went away with the clutch engaged. Was it a new or second hand box that went it?
