Can it be turned off? Just thinking from a Data protection point of view, does the site need to be collating and holding peoples phone numbers?

The phone numbers have actually been massively useful for reuniting people with lost accounts.

Also, people have full add/edit/delete control over them, so that pretty much takes care of the Data Protection side of things.
