On a sidenote, anyone know what they're building at the back of Tescos?

Going to resurrect this post as think it is valid, but how did aldi get refused planning permission and now we have another petrol stations, subway , pizza bar essentially out of the same location

Glad its there as extra jobs and a 24 shop , extra services, but why that and not Aldi.

    Genuine question

Will they be knocking the old train station building as well. Could be a protected building

Its not on their site notice anyway , so If say no in fact it might make it more attractive for renovation rather than looking like a symbol of a ghost town from the wild west, isn't it abandoned for 65 odd years ffs,

The serial objectors , a certain shop owner and a certain councillor , hopefully will not be able stop
New jobs and services, like what happened in the rivers town farce , I would still live to hear what really happened as per my question above

Would be good to see the old building done up maybe into a coffee shop or nice gift /arts and crafts place.
Not a local so don';t know who the serial objectors are but the area where the buses stop over looks dodgy as hell and a small supermarket wouldn't do any harm for the area especially with it so close to the prom.

If you read through the previous pages you will see to whom I refer to , Aldi have been trying to get into Tramore for years in different locations.
It baffles me how one section of the town has no reasonable shopping facilities , yet a 3rd filling station (applegreen which I'm happy for) was approved and built .
Why are all the supermarkets in one general location so if you don't have a car
no real public transport exists, the options do become limited for certain sections.
BTW I'm not a local either and do drive so it doesn't affect me the most , i feel that in a town like Tramore you shouldn't absolutely need a car.
In regards to the bus terminus and Victorian railway building ,see the link for the station and Aldi

Another store owner up the other end of the town complaining and winning, that's Ireland to a T. My experience from the small local shops is they are a lot more expensive, bout time competition came in for the locals.

Tell me about it , and if you read the objections at the time , a certain councillor from riverstown I believe, submitted an almost carbon copy of the store owners objection, one could assume that he didn't write it himself.
A political representative blocking jobs and services on behalf of a potential fear a business owner has, despite being a totally different business/ market , banana republic.

Now I don't know did an bord pleanala consider these ridiculous objectives but end result was a third filling station and no supermarket for people withouy cars .
Thanks for the link was going to look it up

Had a look at the plans, the council have certainly improved their site since the last time I looked. Looks like a fairly decent proposal , but we won't see the "seasoned objectors" launch their attacks until about week 4 (in my experiperience".
Hopefully the right and fair outcome will be achieved.

Looking at the previous site probably not the best place but this one in town looks good

That's the one alright, and there was at least one even before that I believe. Gotta give it o the German outlet they know theirs good potential here and it is spread more evenly around the town, unless some of the chippers object because Aldi will see frozen chips cheaper and they get our local representative to sign a nearly photocopied letter.

5 objections update on the planning site , all from the 1st November, all with identical objections suspect in itself , one is from tesco and one from SuperValu , all saying need to consolidate the retail as otherwise a customer needs to drive

Madness , u would swear tesco didn't have a car park never mind filling station

I am all in favour of an Aldi in Tramore, but I don't really think that is the best site for it. Mainly because I would like to see the visual amenity of Tramore's beach front improved; the fairground etc is fine, its in keeping with the entertainment aspect of a seaside town, but a discount supermarket? Not really. A large, single storey barn of a building just there isn't going to improve the view much, and I do agree it will create traffic issues in the summer.

On the other hand, if the increased footfall encourages someone to take the railway station in hand and turn it into cafes and craft type shops, especially with foot access from the supermarket, maybe it will be worth it.

Its not a perfect spot and the whole area has so much potential but it won't be developed at all .
The lake , the green area , the station the prom absolutely could be amazing but it won't its Ireland,
Have to disagree with the chippers , gambling and rusty amusements , I know tho it brings employment

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,939 ✭✭✭spookwoman

Looking at this from a non native view, i think a supermarket is badly needed in that area. I don't know where tesco is or the other big stores but I know one thing someone living along the low lying part of the town with a load of shopping is going to have a nightmare if they are walking for relying on public transport.
Having no proper shop means having to take the bus (no space for bags) or drive. Most people like to do a big shop once a week. For someone with no car and can't hang around for a bus it's incredibly inconvenient. Then add the elderly, people with prams and kids even the sick, Tramore is not the best place to live when it comes to local conveniences that people need. Yes it's a tourist town but the people that live there should be put first.

I don't disagree with that at all, but putting in a discount supermarket is not going to improve the amusements. Certainly put a shopping centre type development there, but one that provides all the services rather than just the rather specialised range that an Aldi provides. There are other places in the town that could accommodate Aldi without putting it on the seafront, surely there is somewhere over towards the Riverstown area where it would be useful for the residents of that side of the town.

I'm all for the development and addition of Aldi but I would like to see it placed elsewhere. I don't think down by / near the Sea Front is a suitable location for such a development. I don't think any commercial objector when they are objecting really are concerned about the impact on the area, though. It would be great to see Aldi moved up beside Lidl / Tesco and have them all in the one area.

  • Registered Users Posts: 795 ✭✭✭rasper

It might encourage some development as opposed to dereliction which it is , nothing wrong with any supermarket down this end of the town , what's the point in sticking with 3 others and the rest of Tramore can make do with corner shops .
Much prefer a supermarket than another Chinese/ pound shop or bookies and its not exactly on the prom

Where is access gained to the aldi car park, is it down on strand road.

  • Registered Users Posts: 795 ✭✭✭rasper

I believe so , think it runs in at the back of Misty's diner & bobbys fishing tackle , the road where the toilets are , hardly all that pristine and well planned area down there that a single floor supermarket is going to drag the whole location into a desolate wasteland. Hopefully breath some life into the place.

its been refused anyway, Tesco and Supervalu and their cronies objections seem to have won out , Tramore yet again looses out on jobs and facilities.
    what a shame

If Waterford City is dying on its knees with lack of investment, infrastructure and no political pull what chance has Tramore got

  • Registered Users Posts: 795 ✭✭✭rasper

Im all for proper planning but when we dont have jobs or facilities with poor public transport, then we look at the planning fiasco with Apple in Athenry.
I think biased choices are being made, I think im correct when I say that when celtworld was knocked they had planning for dunnes stores there

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,939 ✭✭✭spookwoman

What about tesco i's not the best location for public transport or for people walking/cycling if they live at the bottom of the hill. It looks like they don't want competition. Public transport in Tramore has never been good, buses not on time and even not even showing up, not to mention it's one of the most expensive ones in waterford

About time this is happening, tramore has been dying on its knees a long time now and this is only a good thing for the town, tramore has only become a superb of Waterford city considering it has a bigger population than dungarvan
