Never ceases to amaze me the basic brainlessness of some people. Obviously a ceremony at am atheists funeral is for the mourners. The last thing we'd try and do is copy some made up religions meaningless babblings-how impersonal and demeaning!

Would you not just have a tea party or something? You could quote maths equations in the middle of it. Or why not have a sponsored meta-physics discussion group? All donations going to the Cryogenic Society of America.

And how exactly would that help anyone remember the deceased or mourn their loss?

I'd love a tea party actually! And I'll skip the maths since I really dislike maths, and meta-physics...and cryogenics I suppose is vaguely interesting.

I'll just go for cake. Nom nom. Oh, and merguines!!! At the end of the day, people are still coming together over my death. Doesn't matter if it's over muffins or communion wafers: as humans we still say goodbye to our dead.

You have some really bizarre and confused notions about what it means to not be religious.

As long as there is a chorus line of dancing girls and a free bar I'll be happy.

You gotta go out in style!

Oh yes, of course, you're quite right of course, your narrow minded preconceptions about atheists are bang on the money yet again. It's uncanny. Atheists only interests in life are maths and science...no love, no friends, no family, no spouse or children, no hobbies, no interests, no love of music, no neighbours or community....what else could a ceremony to mourn their passing have to do than a spot of meta-physics, ye gads - I'm not sure if it's ignorance or just complete stupidity at this stage.

I'll pick you up on the love bit. I see love as a divine mystery. You see love as a problem you haven't figured out yet.

Why do you insist that atheists are hyper-rational robots? This has been pointed out as nonsense so many times now I've lost count.

Mystery : Problem to which it is believed no solution exists.
Problem : Something for which the solution is not yet known.

No wonder, you don't want to speak to your wife.

Eh, you're wittering again, possibly still under the illusion you are making some far reaching deep and meaningful interjection.

So what's the point of the "ceremony" then? To make everyone feel warm and fuzzy about themselves? Obviously you're not going to be sitting around praying for the repose of the soul.

Are there any rituals at a "ceremony of tribute"? Is there an ailse up the middle of the hall and a procession of the body?
An old schoolfriend of mine died recently and he had a small ceremony in the funeral home as he was an atheist. His family and some friends each spoke some words about him and his life. Everyone else listened and then paid their respects. Why does religion have to preclude a gathering of this nature? Are you ****ing serious? I find your maniacal dogmatism offensive and bit by bit this sort of crap is pushing me to an all out militant atheistic stance. Mods, please close this farce of a thread.

Love? Does not compute, bleep, bleep. There is only sci-ence. Bloop.

Let us all plug into the atheist hive mind and solve some maths problems.

I've no doubt that you guys/gals would fail the Turing Test.

You're really just trolling at this stage aren't you? And you know what, you're not even an interesting troll. We've had better. Your report card currently reads 'Must try harder'.

I think he's kind of funny, especially in this thread.

He's been pouncing on statements with this theatrical air of "So you have an AISLE too? And a podium, why that's just an ALTAR! Aha! Suspiciously like MASS, isn't it Atheists?" as if expecting everyone to exclaim "Oh noes, mister. You're so right. How did I never encounter such overwhelming logic before!"

He's also been randomly making evil comic book villain like declarations along the tone of "Mwhahahaha, I've put the cat amongst the pigeons now, or rather, the God amongst the Atheists, haven't I? Dwell on that, ATHEISTS!" as he announces his departure for the time being. I can almost see him sweeping his cape around his smug, self satisfied grin as he disappears into the night. Of course, when this is precluded by ignoring any points made against his declarations and instead making statements like "Nah nah nah, you'd all fail a Turing test, and you smell." it lessens the impact somewhat.

With apologies to Alfred Bester: Education- None, Skills- None, Merits- None, Recommendations- None. "Stunted by lack of ambition...The stereotype Common Man...He has reached a dead end."

Edit: Of course, he might just be a troll, but what would be kind of boring. So for now I choose to believe he's on the level!

Actually, I found today out I got 100% in a statistics exam. It was a 2 hour exam that I completed in 40 minutes. *smug*

    I think you're lying.

I mean, a Catholic couldn't possibly get 100% in a test of logic! That's the sole reserve of atheism!

"Foolish Atheists! Cower before your Lord and Master, Possessor of the coveted 100% in Statistics! Where's your God now eh, ATHEISTS?"

Seriously though, DL, I think you can do better. A sweeping generalisation or two about atheists would be appreciated.

A Catholic that was good at statistics probably could. Much like a Muslim that was good at statistics could, or a Pastafarian etc etc...

No, I think he was talking about you specifically. No-one has ever said that religious people can't be rational or logical.

No, I mean someone smart enough to get 100% in an exam like that in less than half the allotted time wouldn't post things as dumb as the stuff you have.

Your baiting, snide, inaccurate and vindictive posts don't suggest someone who is old enough to have a post graduate degree in physics either.*

*But hey, I could be wrong.

This thread actually made me Laugh Out Loud :D Very funny...

At the same time, what a horrible idea that people are somehow not entitled to a ceremony, just because they are not religious! This was the only thing that worried me when deciding to break away from the Catholic church... what about weddings? what about if I have kids? when I die? No more ceremonies/celebrations ever?!?!? But happily I found out that there is an alternative, for all those occasions :)

For the OP, you should check out the Humanist Association of Ireland (www.humanism.ie), they perform secular ceremonies for weddings, funerals and naming ceremonies (as an alternative to baptisms). I am having a humanist wedding in a couple of months, can't wait! I have been to one before and it was really nice - very meaningful, just minus the God bits :p
