I missed out on both of the two recent PC deals in Aldi, so I'm taking the plunge and am going to try to put a system together myself.

Never built a machine before but have done a few upgrades on my Dell, but it's on it's last legs now, so any advice / shopping lists would be appreciated.

So I'm looking at a build that

    - Costs about €500, without OS
    - Be capable of playing Bioshock 2 reasonably well
    - Look fairly understated - no need for neon lights etc
    - A built in card reader and internal wireless would be great

Any advice would be really appreciated

There was actually a competition thread with an abundance of €500 builds

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055766301

For some decent gaming, I threw in what I believe to be a pretty good build, check it out:

(I see prices have changed since the comp lol)

But this build has a triple core Athlon II, a radeon HD5750, and 4GB fast ram and a 550W very good PSU. Can't really go wrong for €535~

€530 shipped, including internal Wireless-N and card reader ;)

Went for a slightly butcher graphics card just in case you intended on running BioShock 2 (or most other things to be fair) on a 1080p screen where even a HD5750 might have begun to flag just a little :o RAM is basic but OCs surprisingly well and as I included a full 4GB you can't complain :P Just a little mean on the PSU due to the big jump in price to the 550W range, but given the rig would have trouble nosing past 200W during intense gaming I think I'm justified, just don't overvolt the rig too hard :D And while the case is a bit more garish than some budget options its a more modern internal layout, smexier on the inside (black is back in vogue :D) and has a lot of upgradability on the cooling side if ever you need to shift the heat a bit quicker (being a modern layout you can stick a couple of 120/140mm exhaust fans at the top).

    And RAM and motherboard

Maybe he thought it was to upgrade the existing computer.

Thanks for posting the builds guys, I'm looking at a cheap rig too.

PS : Is there a significant difference in performance between Athlons and Phenom II's?

For gaming, not so much really (especially if gaming at higher resolutions, say 16x10 or higher). For encoding / transcoding, yes there will be a fair bit of a difference due to the lack of L3 cache in the Athlon II's. However, they would still be plenty powerful enough for most tasks.

Look closely. The first item is an Upgrade Kit with an Athlon X4-620, mobo (think its a MSI 770-C45) and 4GB unknown DDR3. No case though :P
PS : Is there a significant difference in performance between Athlons and Phenom II's?

Varies a fair bit. There's no difference clock-for-clock but certain apps (compression, crypto and to a lesser extent games and transcoding) the juicy L3 cache prevents the RAM from bottlenecking the high throughput of the Phenom2 when working with repetitive multithreaded workloads.

From what I recall, the Seagate 7200.12 series has some reliability issues, so I would go with an equivalent Western Digital if I were you. The case also seems rather pricey.

Rest looks good though. (Is there a DVD drive in there somehwere?)

It'd better be a "much better case" ... €90?! Would this not suffice? http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=354717

i use the antec 300 with two green led fans case but honest for the extra13euro from the first case u picked the haf 922 is a great great case

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

I'm sure it is, but I don't really think a sixth of the budget should be spent on the case...

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Er... isn't this supposed to be a ~€500 build?

    Try a HD5770, 500GB Samsung F3, CX400 PSU and Antec 300 case!
