Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Bought this today. Hopefully the ridiculous colour scheme will help deter hoodlums from stealing it..

While a single exam doesn't quite justify a post-exams shopping-spree, I had a 10 euro boots voucher, points on my boots advantage card and a 10 euro HMV voucher so today I bought myself:

    20090327-soap-and-glory-the-righteous-butter.jpg

    john-frieda-sheer-blonde-boost-mousse-200ml.jpeg

And of course a USB mouse for my laptop, but that was a necessity rather than a luxury so it doesn't really count as post-exam treats!

Seconding this. Not too keen on getting a netbook. (I mightn't even have €500 though :( I hate being poor.)

I just got my grubby hands on this today:

I have one of those Acer netbooks that Timbuk2 has, and it was €270 in PC World. 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive - get an external hard drive (which most people will have regardless of how big your laptop's HD is) and it's all you'll need. It's definitely more handy to get a small one (I got used to the 'smallness' within a day or so) - bigger laptops being better is a bit of a scam, imo. The netbook will definitely suffice for facebook, itunes and photos - can do everything any other laptop does! Plus the portability and battery life (8 hours!) is brilliant.

That's reassuring! Only thing that really worries me is the smallness and whether or not I'd get used to it. I have these visions of myself squinting at a tiny screen and giving myself migraines. :p

It doesn't, and I believed this would be an issue as well - but it hasn't been at all. Discs are an outdated format, and I doubt people will be using them at all soon - too awkward. USB sticks, SD cards - that's where we're headed now. What do you need a CD drive for, really? Everything can be downloaded and found (yes, legally as well!) internally now. I know it's a pity for DVDs, CDs, etc. but there are so many other ways to get around it. CD drives are too big and clunky, not many of the smaller laptops are bothering with them anymore.

Yeah, I thought this would be me as well:p - I had a much bigger laptop before it, and it definitely was a... drastic change at first, but like I said, only very briefly. I was concerned because I have these whale-ish fat fingers and the keyboard's tiny, but you do adjust!:P

You can get external ones that work via USB if needs be. I have that same acer notebook and haven't ever needed to use a CD drive during college.

What I will say is this: Lads, don't buy a Toshiba Satellite Pro. We've had it for just over a year, and somehow, it manages to be the slowest machine going.
    AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

(yes, it runs Windows XP. I'm not sure how much of the problem that is. Yes, I will eventually install some linux distro on it or something)

I had one, not sure if it was a Pro version but it was fustratingly slow. Wouldn't move at all - that said, I think the pittance number of RAM didn't help. How I bared with it, is beyond me.

Huge +1 on avoiding the Satelite Pros, I had many problems with mine. The most annoying one was when it would constantly overheat and shutoff doing basic things like web surfing etc etc.
