It's much of a muchness really. Maxi and Riera are fairly similar in terms of workrate and ability to keep possession.

I just think it's unusual how few games Riera has started.

It is possible that Riera has falled out of favour but you also make a good point. We have quite a few options available on the left wing these days and only one can play.

by being injured most of the season? every time he has come back rafa has thrown him into the starting xi so maybe just taking his time with us winning and stuff

If Maxi wasn't starting games, surely there'd be a fuss over that? Kuyt can't be dropped for obvious goalscoring reasons, and more hidden hardworking ones, meaning Dave uptop is the sensible option.
