Just looking at the sales figures out today from CSO and I cannot figure out why there's such a difference from the SIMI ones out a week or so ago.

SIMI new cars for Jan 2010: 16,595

CSO new cars for Jan 2010: 10,467

Anyone know why these numbers are so different?

    Thanks.

CSO go by the cars taxed by a certain date. SIMI go by vehicles registered.

So does that mean a lot of cars are being registered but not sold? Or just a big run on sales in the last few days of Jan which will be taxed in Feb?

It means there's a whole pile of Fiats/Fords/Toyotas/Nissans and everything else sitting up in a yard somewhere with 10-d plates and no homes do go to.

So a lot of cars pre-registered, or some slight lag in taxing or a bit of both?

I'd hazard a guess that the majority have been sold but they have not been taxed by their owners yet.

Some will have been registered by garages I'd imagine.

Last year 10,996 cars were taxed by the end of January, SIMI figures show 15,877 were registered last January. - So the imbalance is fairly consistant.

Maybe SIMI are lying so they can say the scrappage scheme is working :D

Problem is this year SIMI are saying sales in Jan were up 5% while CSO are saying they were down 5%

We'll see a better picture by the end of Q1. SIMI wouldn't be encouraging dealers to register cars they havent sold yet. The Feb 10-day figures from SIMI are up 38% on same period last year.
