We are fillng the Learners permit for a licence and there is a part that asks

"Do you have a phycical disability which requires that adaptations be made to a vehicle to enable you to drive?"

my girl friend can walk, doesnt use wheelchair etc so it's not a clear cut Yes No answer. But she does have brittle bones and is shorter then normal.... (4 and half foot) But might have trouble using the peddals .. How can she be assessed without having a licence to see if she will need an adapted car... Most places say you need a licence before you can be assessed.. But we cant fill in the form before knowing for sure if she needs an adapted car.

She should go to the Irish Wheelchair Association in Clontarf, Co Dublin. There is a driving school there and they also carry out assessments for disabled people to determine what adaptations(if any)that are required. The telephone number is 01-8186400.

I second that – contact the IWA. http://iwa.ie/services/motoring.aspx[/FONT]
Your gf should just ring them and explain her circumstances and that she is unsure as to whether or not adaptations are required. As you say they might not provide the Assessment without a Learner Permit, but by talking to her, they can certainly advise her on the application.
IMO you are going down the right road with this. This Assessment is the way to go if there’s even a slight chance that you may need Adaptations. Adaptations make driving easier and safer for both the driver and other road users.
IWA also provide subsidised Driving Lessons which are much cheaper than regular driving lessons. The cars have Automatic Transmission and are equipped with all kinds of Adaptations, so at least you can “try before you buy”. You can even do the Driving Test in the IWA car.
She could also contact the Disabled Drivers Assoc of Ireland http://www.ddai.ie/
Best of luck with it all and happy and safe motoring :)
