please post, my cisco reverted back to factory settings on its own last week and wireless has been poor since....thanks
slave 1 - Try these settings:

Ping in to the modem, 192.168.1.1. Go to the Setup tab. Scroll down to the Wireless link and click on Security. My setup looks like so:

    Primary Network: Enabled
    WPA: Disabled
    WPA-PSK: Disabled
    WPA2: Disabled
    WPA2-PSK: Disabled
Next 7 fields should be greyed out.
    WEP Encryption: WEP (64-bit)
    Shared key authentication: Optional
    802.1x Authentication: Disabled
Network Key 1: Enter whatever numeric key you want. Leave Network Key 2 - 4 alone.
    Current Network Key: 1

That's all I think I changed to get back up and running. Good luck.

    Hey,

Anyone notice over the last few days that their BB has gotten real slow? I'm hooked up through ethernet so not a wireless issue.. it seems to be something to do with my upload speed and ping.. both scoring very badly. both tests were at an A level a few days ago.

    Any help / Ideas?

    Cheers

Take a screenshot of the modem (not router if you have one separate) homepage.

Holldem, this is the EXZACT problems I have been having since I got upc installed nearly 3 months ago, the upload is just so poor, it causes webpages not to load, ages to load and xbox can't connect. yet the download is grand 10-15meg,
I've just been on the phone to them again tonight. the tech team can deffo seem a problem(they say its a weak line) but yet when the techs come out (during the day) the connection is perfect.
this only seems to happen between 7pm -12. when you do speed tests on the upc website & speedtest, when it gets to the upload part does it usually give an error? what area you in?

    hey,

no i dont normally get an error but i will get considerably less upload than i should.. like mine should normally be 1.5m up and i get 0.2m.. i just did upc's speedtest there for the first time and it gave the same results..

I might keep a log of both their speedtest results and speedtest.net's for a few days and send it in next time i call.. they never see anything wrong when i do call

  • Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,389 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lenny

Yea, when i do it on the upc.ie & upc.nl & speedtest, I get an error because the upload is so low, when I do the speedtest on my iphone which would use the wireless it would get about 0.01 or maybe 0.08, which is appalling.
its just a shame that the upc.ie don't have a facility to save the tests..

like I mean the connection is gone back near perfect just before 11pm tonight.. problems started about about 8pm

On speedtest.net, there is a "Your Results" summary button at the top of the page. This will show any technicians when and by how much the speed drops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

you can also download all the results as a CSV file to your PC, although the one time i sent it to UPC support to show them the crappy speeds i had at the time, they emailed me back to say they didn't have the facility to read CSV files!

Been having problems with UPC, connection dropping etc. similar to what has been described here.

Can anyone tell me how bad this looks for 15 meg broadband?

it would look pretty good if you read those numbers back to front. :D

    but seriously, that's abysmal.

yours should look something like this (with a slightly lower upload):

    939016821.png

it's been said plenty of times before that speedtest.net is a very arbitrary and often inaccurate method of speed measurement but you should get several orders of magnitude better than that even on your worst day. pingtest.net on the other hand is usually pointless.

if you want to do your own ping tests and get realistic results then download multiping and set up pings to your gateway, dns servers, upc's web server and a few other websites like eircom, rte, the indo etc. and leave it running for a while and see what the results are there.

how are you connecting to the modem/router?

if it's wireless then the first thing you need to do is test it via an ethernet cable directly connected to the router and your pc/laptop to make sure it's not a wireless issue.

do 3 speedtests from the dublin speedtest server one after the other and copy paste the results here.

Just to add my 2c here. I experienced issues with a UPC cable modem connection using a Belkin wireless router. Connection kept dropping (on the wireless), so I got a new (also Belkin) router, and the same problem kept happening. Maddening.

Wired directly into the modem was grand, no issues. I spent ages trying to figure out why the wireless would keep dying, whereupon at least a 'Repair' was needed to reconnect, and in some cases the network SSID would disappear altogether from available networks pending a router restart.

However, I've fixed the problem by about 80% simply by changing the channel the router uses. Used one of those freeware tools to inspect neighbouring SSIDs and their channels, and just moved to a channel no-one else was using. Network quality has jumped loads. Occasionally the bastard amber light flashes again and the transfer stalls, but it doesn't cut out altogether and is abck to a reassuring blue within 10 secs.

    Hope this helps someone...

That's a common problem most people don't look into. Inssider is a good program to fins out what networks and channels are in your area and it is free.

+1 for inSSIDer, it's a great little app. i even have a similar app on my mobile that does pretty much the same thing using the phones wifi. not as strong as the wireless on a laptop admittedly, but in a pinch it's handy to have in your pocket.

    Thanks for the response.

After a week of back and forths with UPC, 2 call outs with technicions it turned out to be a problem external to my house.
I believe it's been fixed now and the above results are much more promising.

They were fast and efficient when we told them they could fix the problem or take the entire package back.

Will report back if any future problems arise.

    Damn you are lucky dyl10.

    I was speaking to them recently and found out the following interesting facts about my account;

71 tickets in total. 67 for the same issue, ongoing since 2007 and not resolved.
240 interactions on the account (multiple actions per ticket)
At least 3 escalations to their Customer Care team.
    1 Official complaint (in progress).

I guess they don't like me...

Our UPC connecting drops every 40/60 mins or so now - it used only do it once/twice a night. It's not a wireless issue - You can see all the status lights on the router drop away completely (except power) and it usually takes around 20 seconds before they start returning.

It's getting seriously irritating. My wife is talking to her sister over skype and gone.

Mine does the same thing. It seems that the router decides to spontaneously reboot from time to time. You wouldn't want to be in the middle of anything important.

My UPC connection here at home has been losing connection all evening but just noticed they've upgraded the firmware on the cable modem they provide. Presume that has had something to do with the connection dropping all the time at irregular intervals. Nice of them to upgrade it and all but would've been nicer to have had some forewarning of the upgrade taking place.

That's pretty much exactly what's happening to me. I had a total outage from about 2pm on Monday to 5pm yesterday. They scheduled a tech to come friday, but I got a call today telling me the issue had been resolved. However, the connection's been dropping every few hours which is driving me a bit mad. Presumably there must be a problem on their side somewhere if we're all suffering from the same problem? What area are you in?

Back online for a sec , I am in Dublin 2 Pearse Street ,,,was at home from work today so have rebooted the cable modem a few times. But no improvement in service:mad:

I have the old setup I think, with a Scientific Atlanta - Cable Modem EPC2203 & Netgear WGR614V9 Wireless Router.

PS ...anyone know the admin - user name and password for the Scientific Atlanta - Cable Modem.? and has anyone ever pressed the reset button on the back ( I feel if I did that it would wipe the config that UPC has put on the Box and I will not get back on their network )

Try admin and W2402 as the pass. This works for me, ie, it's accepted, but it doesn't actually allow me to access anything extra.

The settings are grabbed from a UPC tftp server at modem boot up, so I wouldn't be too worried about trying a reset.

My Connection went the other day Thursday but that was as there were guys doing something with the cables in the estate and after a few hours it was back up. But since then the modem has been dropping the connection a few times a day. And even though all lights are correct and on on the modem and on the wireless router. You have to reboot both modem and router to get the connection back. Have never had this problem before, am assuming whatever the guys did with the cables in the estate has caused the problem. No other networks using the same channel as me either. Looks like a call to UPC is in the pipeline for me :(

I've been on with UPC trying to sort out my problem. In fairness to them, I have to say it's the best support I've ever experienced from a company; makes a great change from the NTL days.

They've tried a few things, but they say the basic reason that the connection keeps dropping is because the modem isn't receiving some signal, and it forces a reboot to try and rectify the situation. This is also why some of you may be experiencing the wifi dropping out at regular intervals (wifi goes down during the reboot). They're sending out a tech to me on Tuesday, who will be carrying out a stress test on the line to try and identify the location of the problem. As I'm experiencing packet loss of about 20% they're fairly sure it's a network issue.

Might be worth giving them a ring if you're having similar woes,
