Is this the same Brendan O'Connor that wrote this article in July 2007 advising people to buy houses?

The bould Brendan doesn't like having that article mentioned any more...
    http://www.tribune.ie/magazine/article/2010/jan/24/anyone-can-be-like-fintan-otoole-and-follow-the-co/
I mention an article he wrote in 2007 in which he suggested it might be a good time to invest in property. At this point, possibly remembering my review and suspecting a journalistic stitch-up, he gets very angry. He doesn't let me speak for a few minutes as he talks at me and even does a bit of pacing around the Sunday Independent's kitchen. On the dictaphone recording you can hear me in the background saying things like: "I'm just trying to..." "If you'd let me..." "Could I..." but I never get beyond that. This extract sums up the gist of what he says:

"I'm doing a chat show here and you want to ask me if I was wrong in this one piece I've written. Will we go back over your work and see where you've been wrong or indeed if you've ever had the balls to come out and say anything important? This is ludicrous. It's ridiculous. I'm meant to be sitting here doing an interview about a chat show I'm doing on Saturday week and you want to talk about something you probably found on Wikipedia. Don't bull**** me. I came here and opened up out of respect. And you know why? Because I believe in freedom of speech. Anyone else would have said 'I'm not sitting down with that c**t'. Seriously they would. You went away and found a piece in Google and harangued me on this one piece I wrote in 15 years of writing."

After a while the storm is over and he's sitting down grinning self-consciously. "Look, I've no wish to airbrush over anything I've written in the past," he says. "But do I regret it? No, because it was valid position at the time. So yes I got it wrong in one article. Is that what you want? But I'll tell you something, at least I got it wrong because I was trying to think originally and make my own judgements. Anyone can be like Fintan O'Toole and follow the consensus: be for the poor and against the rich; be for all good things and against all bad things. You can have that simple view of the world, but I don't know what the point would be because there are a hundred other guys doing that. I'd rather be a guy who thinks for himself and gets it wrong."

Good link there ^^. Freyne has actually been penning some good stuff for the Tribune.
I'd rather be a guy who thinks for himself and gets it wrong.
That'd be most of the time so Brendan.

But isn't he on The Apprentice, now that's canny and savvy.

I like Miriam but she is bad at chatshows, and a bad casual interviewer. What we are looking for is an Irish Jonathan Ross. I'm not saying JR is amazing, but that's the type of presenter we are after. Somebody to brighten things up a bit. I would imagine such an interviewer does not work in RTE currently and may have to be headhunted.

There's bound to be a mile of possibles out there, they just don't lunch in the RTE canteen is all.

    here here!!!

    It's 'Hear Hear' btw!

Re: 'An Irish Jonathon Ross' from another poster..

Seriously? I think we can do better than using him as a reference point. Bland is not the word. If I suggest the folliwing, how many of them do you all hate and/or think have a face for radio?

    Kathryn Thomas
    Craig Doyle
    John Kelly
    Tom Dunne
    Miriam O'Callaghan
    Lucy Kennedy
    Martin King
    Marty Whelan
    Brian Ormand
    Ian Dempsey
    Baz Ashmawy
    Dave Fanning
    Dara O'Brian

I could go on, but you lot wouldn't care.. you probably will not be happy until we mimic BBC light entertainment, replace the Angelus with 'God Save the Queen' and draft in a humour vacum like Jonathon Ross to represent Irish television..

All of the above would be a huge improvement on mutton-head O'Connor..

You should remove the link to you blog (yep, the one that slags off Irish TV) if you want your rantings to be taken seriously here.

a few comments on your suggestions:
john kelly: seems to have to become very arrogant on his show in the past few years for some reason.
dara o brian: can't see him bneing tempted back into the rte fold anytime soon.
craig doyle/tom dunne/ian dempsey: would like to see either back on tv/rte soon, natural laid-back manner.
    baz ashwany: seriously?
kathryn thomas: hate- no. a face for radio- yes.

Most I am sure would be better than BOC. I say most because i am not familiar with all of them or not an admirer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,758 ✭✭✭Laois_Man

Having watched a bit of the new BO'C shows...I have to say I've found it to be car crash TV of the highest order.

BUT, there's something attractive and addictive about uncomfortable TV chat. It's awful stuff. but in a very entertaining way, and that's good.

His very first interview with Linda Martin and Twink set the scene well. Their attitude towards him...toe-cringing stuff.

Someone told me about his disasterous interview with Michael Barrymore which I had missed - and so I just had to log onto the RTE iPlayer to watch it - and loved it. Admit it - we're all drawn to disasters. It's a guilty pleasure

I say extend the show by an hour and make the guests even more bitter, deranged and delluded and bring Jim Corr on every time there's an earthquake, plane crash, volcano eruption, terrorist attack etc. Infact, bring him on next Saturday - I'm sure he has some remarkable revelations to make about the Belgian train crash!

Kathryn Thomas........... James Nesbitt is too busy.

Craig Doyle.................... You know that lad in school who was sound but so so boring..... yep

    John Kelly...................... Hmmm interesting.

    Tom Dunne.................... Fuck off

    Miriam O'Callaghan.......... Cold fish

    Lucy Kennedy................ Are ya serious?

Martin King.................... Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha

Marty Whelan................ Doesn't annoy me, but may not make for too sparky a show.

Brian Ormand................. Friday night watching a man with a spud for a head..... No thanks.

Ian Dempsey................. See my answer for Marty....... however if he can get Bowie on......

Baz Ashmawy................ "How low can you go?"

Dave Fanning................ Doesn't annoy me, but will alienate at least half the viewership.

Dara O'Brian.................. Always wheeled out in these debates. Be careful what you wish for, as I reckon he would get ****ed off with RTE after a few weeks then deliver substandard performances.

I'd have Moncrieff in the hot seat myself

I don't agree with this. The View is one of RTE's best shows. A simple premise with informed analysis and well steered by the knowledgeable Kelly.

Now that's something I actually agree with, he could do (and has done) a good job.. There are good personalities in this country, and I guess my list was a little off the top of the head, but I'd still give anyone a chance if they stepped up to the plate..

Re, the Saturday Night Show being car crash TV, I'm beginning to feel that that's the whole idea of the show.. O'Connor certainly pokes at his guests to get the required responses, and imo that's great entrertainment. There's gotta be a distinction from the Late Late for a start, and as much as I like Miriam's summer show, it was a little too Late Latey for my liking..

Re: my blog, point taken, it's dead anyway... But TV3 are a much easier (and deserving target) and rarely get a good hiding here...

Anyway, I'll say one thing. I don't think I've seen RTE try harder than this season. Countless comedy/entertainments shows have been launched this year, even compared to the other channels across the water.. one day, one will stick.. I'm positive..

In the meantime, bring back 'Soupy Norman' or give Apres Match a weekly show..

Why not bring Richard and Judy over from England? If they gave them enough money, they would do it.

Who is this Brendan O'Connell you speak of?

    Hang on, googling now.

    Ahh that Brendan O'Connell. :D

Brendan John O'Connell (born 12 November 1966 in Lambeth) was a professional footballer who made 451 appearances and scored 79 goals in the Football League playing as a midfielder for Portsmouth, Exeter City, Burnley, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic.[1] Forced to retire from playing because of a blood clot in his leg, O'Connell went on to coach Wigan Athletic's youth and reserve teams, played briefly for Rossendale United in the North West Counties League,[2] and in 2003 became player/assistant manager of Northwich Victoria.[3]

Don't know if he'd be any good at presenting though, he'd probably want to stick to the football.

You mean Turbidry, or just in general? Anyways, spudhead o'connor will probably get the job as it seems to be rte policy to only hire fianna fail cronies. Friday night will be Turbidry, whose connections to FF are well documented, and then on saturday spudhead, whose devotion to ff is pretty evident in his rubbish newspaper column.

Sean Moncrieff tried and failed with his own chat show back in the day. Good Grief Moncrieff was an unmitigated disaster!

I would question he been suited to Radio as well. As bad as Live line and Derek mooney is at times the two programmes are alot better than what Sean puts out at times.
