Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Returning back from an injury

I only play local football, but football is a major part of my life. I've been out for 3 and a half years with Sinding-Larsen-Johansson disease (Jumper's Knee). I used to be quite a good little player. However, I am very nervous about returning. I've had serious set-backs over the past two years.

I've been told by my specialist that my knee will restricted in movement for a little while too. Big problem, two of my biggest assets were my pace and skill. Both of which will be greatly effected by this.

I'm just wondering did anybody on here have any similar problems to what I had? and how did they deal with the comeback.

I've been told I'm safe to play sport again. Which is good, but it's just that nervous thought in the back of my mind that is hindering me right now. I've been training for the last month with no major problems, obviously I was a bit rusty.

I just want to play a bit of footie, I feel this problem may be more psychological than psychical. As I'm worried about the condition of my knee...

    Any advice?

I am unsure what your injury entails but I find myself in a similar, if more short-term situation, at the moment.

I dislocated my Kneecap at the end of November and have been seeing a Physio regularly for strengthening of the surrounding muscles. Just got back running this week (although i have been advised to keep it relatively straight with no serious twisting and turning) but I was feeling a bit anxious about even breaking out into a full tilt.

Probably best part of a month before I can even think about playing but the idea of sliding in (where previously I loved the idea of doing so) is a little daunting at the moment.

That said, I assume 5-a-side is the best way to go for your first dip. You won't get as whacked as you would in competitive football and you will get a good all-round workout. What did they say to you about specific warm-up exercises and/or knee support?

In a previous life i trained as a podiatrist. (changed career several years ago).

Im sure your physio has given you all the info you need. Your condition is common in teenagers as your body grows in spurts and not all rates of growth of surrounding structures are the same. The condition is exascerbated by these growth spurts. Seeing as its been a couple of years, you are more than likely not as prone to the problems you were having as your body will have caught up with itself so to speak.

Follow the guidelines of rehabilitation given to you by your physio and take things slowly, dont overdo it. After a period of time you will get more confident as you begin to strengthen the tissues/structures around your knee and the confidence you had before will return :)

First of all good luck with getting back out there. I've never had a bad injury and am thankful fir that everytime i play anymore. As the guys have said talk to your physio and take it handy comig back. I'd also suggest not signing up for a team instantly! Maybe a 5 aside on astro is the first step but clear it with the doc's first.

I tore the tendonds in my foot a year or so ago. It was bad, only after gettting back into playing ball after 8 odd years of not playing.

I was told to take it handy and thats what I done. Went to the gym a couple of times and when I went playing ball I was afraid to shoot incase anything happened so ended up passing alot more. What i ended up doing was heading out to play a bit before everyone else. Took a few shots etc to see how my foot reacted. If I felt anything I took it extremely easy. After a few games I was back to normal and out playing a few times a week again.

It will take time and patience but its worth it mate. Just don't over do it.
