Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Help! DSLR for a beginner?

I would appreciated the advice of the photography forum regulars!

I have an 18 year old cousin who wants to get a DSLR and she asked me to help her out. Despite owning and using a DSLR (remember when the 300D came out ;)), and even doing some pro photoshoots a few years ago, photography has taken a backseat in my life and I am completely out of the loop as to the latest hardware.

Her budget is 800-900 euro and it must include a lens. Being a Canon man I naturally want to steer her in that direction, but I am open to all suggestions. I saw this for sale at ConnsCamera: http://www.connscameras.ie/canon-eos-500d/p-8714574535319pd.html

Is the 500D newish or coming to end of life? And is that a decent price for it? Any opinions on this?

I would prefer to keep it to Irish companies only, just to make it easier for her to bring it back should there be a problem.

Any advance on the 500D? She's not hardcore photography mad but she loves taking photos and she has wanted to get a DSLR ever since she saw mine :)

    Help appreciated!

Personally I would go into Gunns with her & have a look at what they have. They deal in both Canon & Nikon.

I am not really into the Canon line up but think that the 500D is a recent enough release.

Wow, if my 5D was not a full frame, the 500D would be almost a better camera

If she's only set on a DSLR because she's seen yours then maybe she
'might' be better saving some money and getting something like a Canon G10/G11 instead. Super camera, metal, full manual controls.

Yep not a DSLR, but a very fine camera which will allow her plenty of
creativity. I'd love one but I already have enough cameras :)

Might be worth checking out anyhow :)

a little over budget but might be worth a look the new 550D

For your first SLR, why not look at a second hand? A fair % of people never use them after the first month and you wouldn't be throwing away too much cash. Have a look on Adverts - there are always good deals on there.

    Thanks for the replies.

She definitely wants a DSLR (and a new one at that) so if she can't change lenses she's not interested.

Seems the 500d is a good bet anyway.
