Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

way out of the loop pc bits and pieces.
anyone willing to recommend me some components for an upgrade?

looking at around 250eu to spend.
have all the hard drives, optical drives, cases and cables i could ever need (maybe)

    hoped for reqs are-
    8 sata ports with RAID
2 PCIe slots (in addition to graphics card slot)

just need CPU, RAM and Board (and maybe gfx, may add more cash or wait for a second hand one, have spares to get me up and running)
system will not be a gaming pc, but will act as a tv server running, hopefully 4 DVB-S2 feeds.
each feed currently uses 40-50% of the cpu on POC machine, which is an athlon 3200 and also acts as my fileserver.
looking for machine that can take that kind of load.

if it needs more money, then tell me, and ill put more money in the hat (reluctantly)

Try this: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=575630 for €245 !! although you may have to add an extra SATA board for the 2 extra SATA ports.

This upgrade kit consists of the following components:

    496058 AMD Athlon II X4 620Quad Core, Socket AM3, 2,6GHz, 2MB, Boxed
    477897 MSI 770-C45, Socket-AM3, DDR3ATX, AMD770+SB710,4DDRIII,1PCI-E*16,2PCI-E*1,3PCI,6SATAII,GbLAN
    340915 Crucial DDR3 1066MHz 4GB KIT, CL7,Kit w/two matched DDR3 2GB, 240pin

(or this m/board for built in gfx with HDMI output http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=494708)

Good idea with that upgrade kit. Only problem I can see is that both the PCIex1 slots are clustered around the PCIex16 and you will need a discrete graphics card with this kit as there's no integrated video. Mind you if you don't have one a HD4350 or similar should only be €20-30...

Fair point Solitaire, for the €20-30 more you could get m/board http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=488342 which would give the option of upgraded gfx in the future or use the onboard Radeon HD4200 HDMI card plus 2 well spaced PCIe slots plus another and 2 x PCIe16 (one 4x mode!) and includes 6 x SATA ports too!! Not a bad board for €81, wish i'd bought that myself ;)

oh, for a couple Euro more you can buy the AMD Athlon II X4 630Quad Core, Socket AM3, 2,8GHz, 2MB, Boxed from Elara for about €100 (just to show I'm not bias to Komplett)

thanks guys, components look well suited to what i am after, going to be buying next week so i'll let you know how i get on.
the system will be running 2 of these http://shop.blackgold.tv/epages/BT3159.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3159/Products/BGT3595
but i'll probably just be using the S2 sat feeds for the time being.
may decide to run the dvb-t feeds also, but seems like a lot of bandiwth would be required :)

Looks good, would be very interested to hear how you get on. I have used a technotrend tt-1500c (as well as other non dvb terrestrial cards) in the past but wasn't the greatest experience. That BGT card looks the business.

    All the best!

so, ordered last night, went for the following -

    Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H, Socket-AM3
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=488342

    AMD Phenom II X4 945
    Quad Core, 3.0Ghz, AM3, 8MB, 95W, Boxed
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=488303

    Corsair Value S. DDR3 1333MHz 4GB CL9
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=502745

AXP Powersupply ATX 630W Retail SLI,
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=337116

decided on a cheap PSU as the one i was planning on using has started giving me some trouble, and all the other ones i have spare would really only be suitable for testing motherboards
went for some slightly different components, the motherboard seems to have everything i need and the processor is a bit faster, went for the value ram as i wont be overclocking etc. updates to follow as it arrives and gets built

nice one komplett, picked up all my parts today.
evefything has been unboxed and put together, windows install is in progress...

system noise is pretty low at present but only have 1 hdd installed.

turns out my crappy old case is older and crappier than i thought as all the drive caddys seem to have gone missing.

will need to pick one up at some point.

well, the usual hiccups aside (windows took over an hour to install for some reason, multiple black screesn due to driver issues and a couple of false starts)
the system is now up and running. have sky HD running perfectly with minimal cpu useage.
have onyl 1 tuner at the minute so need to wait for the other ones to go on sale before i can progress an furhter.
will probaly need to run another cat 5 cable and upgrade the rotuer at some point also

    Good work Subway!!

Where did you get the blackgold cards from in the end?

Also, I got and excellent case from Komplett, the Antec 300 Hundred Mini Tower although not that mini. Good sturdy case with plenty of room for drives and great vents. Plus a good price!

    All the best, SB

cheers, the blackgold cards still arent on sale so i only have 1 Hauppauge nova S2-HD at the minute.
when they go on sale i'll get 2 and see how my network copes with 4 HD streams....

    :):)
