This whole affair is a shocking miscarriage of justice perpetrated in no small part by various Irish media establishments. Whether you support headshops or not, we should all be very concerned at such a brazen attack on individual liberty. Here we have productive, tax paying citizens being physically attacked at the behest of dogmatic moralists and murderous crime gangs all the while the government stands by and promises to join in the assault by June.

Ask yourselves why the state has to "protect" its citizens from these headshops? What happened to personal responsibility? Why should it be anyone else's concern if John from Mullingar buys some party pills? If he hasn't hurt anyone else the risk he takes should be entirely his own. How can we consider ourselves a truly free nation when the government refuses to allow people to take responsibility for their own actions, insofar as they affect themselves?

It may seem a petty rant to some but this whole situation, Joe Duffy, Mary Harney, vigilantes, illegal drug dealers, is symptomatic of a much greater and more nefarious malady in this country. I'm not sure about other young people but my disillusionment with this 'nanny' aspect of Irish culture and the future of our limp and capitulating political establishment is very rapidly approaching its peak.

Hopeless might be the word I'm looking for.

what i cant understand is how the good people of dublin are so willing to stand up against legal drug stores but are unwilling to stand against the drug selling scum in our community at least with head shops there are age restrictions

Simple, drug selling scum operate out of areas that the "good people of Dublin" simply wouldn't go!

Just got a text from a friend who's a guard and said the head shop on Nth King street in Dubland is on fire.
    Is he a Fire Guard?

This is getting serious - a good ol' fashioned witch hunt.

Which group do people think is mainly responsible - worried Talk To Joe parents or drug dealers? Or both?

As for the parents - I had a conversation with my Mam about this at the weekend. She was saying that all she knew about legal drugs was the stories of parents calling the Whine Line and talking about how their children had gone to head shops and come home delirious. This is, however, the only information most parents have to go on. I gave her a bit of balance on the subject.

Also - my brother was at a talk in the Abbey a few days ago. Someone was talking (this is third-hand information and may not be accurate) about the increase in suicide rates in Ireland, and said that is "must be those head shops".

The ignorance out there is unbelievable. The government/media should provide more balanced information- but that'd be asking people to think for themselves, wouldn't it?

    Drugs are bad, m'kay.

This has to be the work of drug dealers? There will be none left in no time and the drug dealers will be back in business.

Because it's unlikely the "good people of Dublin" are the ones burning the places down. They had no problem with them before and do you honestly think people who listen to and believe everything on Joe Duffy are the type who would suddenly turn into psychotic arsonists? They're crimes of opportunity. There were people losing business to these shops and now with them gone, everyone is blaming the Joe Duffy brigade. It couldn't have worked out better for them.

Also, it's not just Dublin. There's been a few in Northern Ireland too, apparently. It'll spread across the rest of the country soon enough.

It has to be drug dealers that are doing these arson attacks.
Sure if it's not the Head Shops that are ruining the world, it's definitely the drug dealers. No chance at all that it's a psycho vigilante....nooooo

And after they've dealt with the head shops they're gonna move on their other legal rivals and put the alcohol and cigarette dealers out of business.
Then take out the doctors over prescribing barbituates and depressants.

It MUST be the drug dealers. The Joe Duffy brigade don't have it in them, hysterical thicks yes but they wouldn't have the stones.

There is none on North King Street.

Its on Frederick St. right up past the Garden of Rememberance on the RHS if you have your back to town.

Whats the story, some are saying its gutted, some are saying its minor damage......

they werent out of business, but dealers definitely took a big hit. people who are using the head shops are bound to to just revert to dealers again.

I don't think so. Wouldn't buy the muck those thugs peddle. I'll just go online instead.

If you're the kind of person who is inclined to, I wouldn't go to Spy nightclub in the next few weeks. The nirvana headshop right next door does raging business.

I wouldn't rent a flat within 50 yards of one of these places. It will only be a matter of time before there will be tragedies.

I'd be fairly sure the majority will revert to dealers. even when the head shops are all closed, will it be possible to buy stuff online?

Yes, of course. Sure thats where the Head Shop owners are getting it now. You can see their Ad's online looking for kilos of mephedrone/methylone etc. They just buy it in bulk and bang it into baggies and staple a pretty cover on it and hey presto €35 to the punter. Head shops all over the world retail online. Labs seem to conduct their biz online too, I assume thats how the Headshops get their hands on it. I can't see the owners hoofing it over to Labs in China and coming back through Airports on commercial airliners with backbacks full of white powder, legal though it may be.

The only thing that will happen with the demise of Headshops is that those without access to credit cards, schoolkids etc will have to turn to dealers and buy illegal coke and pills cut with strictnine etc....

Good for the thugs, bad for everyone else. Cnuts.

Such a pity...The Happy Hippy was the best headshop in the town. Nice, informed staff who always gave free skins or gauzes with any reasonable purchase. They were also giving free calendars at one stage. It was possibly the best customer service you got in any shop in Dublin, ironic that the people in it were usually nicely buzzed...

Haha, yeah, I once got a gram of 50x salvia, a little bong, and a torch lighter for €30 there because the member of staff was enjoying his job perks.

With the do gooder's sites set on these head shops, I wouldn't be surprised if these fires are insurance jobs.

Its a quick(although dodgy) way to get your money out before your business goes under as a result of being made illegal.

    </ my two cents>

If they do close down these "headshops" or make all products illegal so they are no longer viable...will argos start stocking bongs, gauzes and big skins?

I wouldn't buy the muck the headshops peddle tbh.

Let the idiots be guinea pigs, while the reasonable people stick to the old reliables. Yes, there's a small chance they could be adulterated with dodgy chemicals but these legal highs are KNOWN to be dodgy chemicals (dodgy as in we know absolutely nothing of their long term effects).

It's interesting that you mention strychnine, you know it used to be used as a stimulant at one stage. Presuming it was used as a stimulant first, I wonder how long it took for people to find out about it's dodgy side effects? More realistically (as these drugs are obviously nowhere near that toxic), how long did it take people to find out about the long term effects of methamphetamine?

    Bullsh1t

I smoked a small baggy of that smoke xxxx stuff to try it out and had a fantastic night out, meanwhile my friend on the beer and wine was slurring his words and couldn't hold a conversation with any girls.

I said I'd try this stuff in the last head shop thread, I did, and it was great, no headache, a little buzz, and beats cigarettes or alcohol.

I'm not sure about the rest of it but the stuff we got was reviewed online as being good, and it was. You won't get that with your soapbar or yokes.

Old reliables, hm yeh right, well I've plenty of experience with both and I know which I'd prefer.

Amusing that you think there is only a 'small chance' coke etc is adulterated with whatever handy white coloured bulking agent is to hand!
Cos those thugs are all heart and they really CARE about the end user....?

Head shops don't care either, however they can't add known poisons as that'd be all the excuse the do-goodies need. Now I know well most of what they are selling is only known 2 or 3 years max and yes we are all guinea pigs but don't delude yourself that street drugs are any safer than those in head shops.

Its swings and roundabouts my friend.

I agree with your point about knowing nothing of the long term effects of the chemicals in these head shop products. But to say you trust street drugs more is a bit ridiculous. The long term effects of the pure drug is known but not the effects of all the other stuff they add in to increase profits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Funkfield

Surely if the dealers are targeting the head shops, then the best thing the government can do is keep them open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭xoxyx

So either it's the shop owners setting fire to their premises because they're afraid of being shut down, or else it's the drug dealers setting fire to these places 'cause they're sick of them being open.
    Damned if you do...

Exactly. We know MDMA is relatively safe, but it's banned. So we have many derivatives, which we know less about, but are legal. The real solution is not to keep the head shops open selling what they sell - it is to legalise and regulate the sale of MDMA, tax it to the hilt and be done with all this.

Indeed. I would pay for overpriced, government regulated, over the counter MDMA.

    Fcuk the dealers.

....but if the head shops aren't open, where do we buy it?

Just went up to see the shop. Front window is indeed out and on the ground, inside is full of soot, although looks like a few glass bongs survived unmelted so I dont know how hot the fire was or whether that suggests accellerant etc

It looked like it was petrol bombed tbh.

One medium size copper outside. Place is ribboned off.

Not really, those premises have been leased most likely so you can't insure a property you don't own (I'm a broker, i know these things!).

They have until June, if they were scared they'd just let stock run out.

Make no mistake, this was the work of the criminal gangs. And joe public/the media are patting them on the back for it.

Wohooo - so glad I live in Ireland!

There would be more then just stock on the premises.
