What's this new Fibre Broadband by UPC

As a UPC customer im entitled to a free upgrade from my 3mb line to the new fibre 5mb line...

Just wondering what the whole "Fibre Broadband" thing is. Is it just a new funky name for faster internet or did UPC actually introduce a new fibre-optic network or whatever?

Also, apart from the obvious jump up to 5mb speed, is there anything better about fibre broadband, such as lower contention ratio maybe?

    It's marketing.

More of the backhaul network is now fibre (similar to telecoms) but UPC insist on putting it in the name to sound fancy.

It's fibre network for long runs but all the cable into each house is still co-ax.

You cant get broadband with the old cable systems or with the MMDS so would only be ADSL
