Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Passat MkIV Timing Belt

Looking at buying a 2004 1.9 TDI Passat with the works - just one thing that's come to my attention is that the car has 111,000 miles on it.

First question is - Is this mileage high for an '04?

Second of all - Does this car use a timing belt or chain? If either; what interval would it need to be changed at?

This is a car that seems too good to be true with a fairly reasonable price. I'm thinking if it's a belt change at 120,000 I wouldn't be too happy with how much it might cost.

    Thanks in advance. :)

It has a belt, and it should be done at 60,000 and would be due again at 120,000.
If you buy the car allow for the cost of the timing belt.
A complete kit(depending on engine code) will cost about 180 and the water pump is about 50/60 Plus about 200 to fit so all in around 400/450 euro's.

That is for the full kit(which is the only way to go when you are the new owner of the car) which includes ,belt/idle roller/tensioning roller/hydraulic damper/new bolts stud and nut.(made by conitech)
    Also water pump/coolant.
