    Basically, in light of the imminent departure of Halifax, what are the other options for current/savings accounts with non-Irish owned banks here?

    * Rabobank
    * Ulster
    * Nationwide UK
    * NIB

    Anything else?

    Do either Nationwide UK & Rabobank offer current account, thought they only did savings ?

    NIB are the former employers of Beverly Cooper-Flynn...

    Diversification :) My main is still AIB but we all need a safety net (think end of Govt guarantees, crisis, NAMA, etc.).

    I meant either, not necessarily both.

    None of those banks have clearing facilities (bar Ulster/NIB I think). So in effect you might as well open an account with one of the clearing banks truth be told.

    You are assuming the "foreign government" is more stable that Ireland....

    I don't think there is any risk whatsoever with deposits in Irish banks, even when the guarantee runs out it will likely be replaced with a more limited one.

    I mean, I know things are bad and all but taking their bad loans, recapitalisation and the guarantee are meant to to do alot more than just protect deposits actually.

    Regardless, you say it is just diversification and I think thats cool.

    Maybe save in a non-euro currency?

    Different currency isn't exactly the same as a different bank as when ships (or banks) sink, they take all their treasures down, regardless of the denomination.

    I remember 10 years ago the dollar was cool and some banks (BoI) offered dollar accounts. Not sure it's still the case.

    Ultimately, I trust the euro more than Ireland so I'd prefer foreign banks rather than foreign currencies.

    What I meant was a UK or American bank. I didn't just mean save in BOI in Dollars for example.

    EDIT: I still think there is no problem regarding customer desposits.

    I'm refreshing this old post to get up to date "post crisis".
    Have all the foreign retail banks pulled the plug on retail services in ROI?
    Anyone know what banks are still operating?

    Thanks All.
